Draft:Cerca (Dating App)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cerca is a dating application that launched in March 2025 by three college graduates. Unlike existing dating platforms, Cerca was designed to match users through mutual connections rather than strangers. The app emphasizes safety and accountability by leveraging users’ existing social networks and debuted with four core features: limited daily swipes, a search function, a matchmaking tool, and 8 p.m. match drops.[1] It raised US$1.6 million in seed funding, led by Corazon Capital, with support from former Match Group CEO Sam Yagan.[2]

History

[edit]

The name "Cerca" is derived from the Spanish word for "close." The idea originated when co-founder and CEO Myles Slayton discussed with friends the perceived shortcomings of existing dating apps, noting that many couples they knew had met through mutuals.[3] Development began in 2024, and the platform officially launched in March 2025.[4]

Features

[edit]

Cerca requires users to connect their phone contacts, enabling matches only between mutual connections.[1] Users can send likes through a search tool, receive curated match suggestions from friends, and are limited to viewing four profiles per day. Matches are revealed at 8 p.m. daily if both parties have expressed interest.[5]

Funding

[edit]

In June 2025, Cerca announced it had closed a seed funding round of US$1.6 million led by Corazon Capital. Notable investors included Sam Yagan, former CEO of Match Group, and former executives from Tinder, OkCupid, and Grindr.[1][2]

Reception

[edit]

Business Insider described Cerca as "a Gen Z–friendly twist on the dating app formula" and noted that its mutual-connection approach "addresses safety concerns while adding a layer of accountability to online dating."[1] The Georgetown Voice called the app "a safer, more intentional alternative" to existing platforms, highlighting that it "limits daily matches and encourages users to meet people already within their extended social circles."[4] USC Annenberg Media emphasized its focus on safety, writing that Cerca "puts control back in the hands of users by ensuring that matches are always connected through mutual friends."[5] In a profile of the founders, Read Feed Me noted that the team "set out to solve the dating app problem for their generation," building an app that mirrors how many Gen Z relationships already form offline.[3]
