Chessify is a chess analysis and training platform that provides cloud-based chess engine analysis and tools for importing chess positions, including by scanning positions from images via its mobile app.[1][2]

Chessify has been covered by Armenian and international outlets in the context of chess education tools and cloud analysis.[3][4] In 2022, the official website for the FIDE Candidates Tournament stated that its live analysis was "powered by Chessify".[5]

History

[edit]

According to reporting in 2017, Chessify was developed as a mobile application intended to digitize chess puzzles from printed materials and support analysis and study on a phone.[3] Later profiles described expansion into additional tools and a cloud-based analysis service aimed at reducing the need for high-end local hardware.[4]

In September 2017, itel.am reported that Chessify would represent Armenia at the international stage of Seedstars World, describing the product as a tool for scanning and digitizing chess positions and visualising moves.[6]

Chessify has been described as receiving support through EU4Business-related programmes in Armenia, in a story focused on chess learning tools and international growth of the mobile app.[7]

Products and features

[edit]

Chessify offers a website and mobile applications that combine position input, analysis and study utilities. Features described in the app listings and media coverage include:[1][2][4]

  • Position scanning: import chess positions by scanning diagrams and chessboards from images.[1][4]
  • Cloud analysis: chess engine analysis performed on remote servers rather than on the user's device.[1][2]
  • Database and study tools: opening exploration and game/position saving features are described in app store listings.[2]

Technology

[edit]

A 2019 profile on itis.am stated that Chessify's scanning functionality uses neural-network-based methods for recognising pieces and digitising positions, and also described a separate search tool for locating positions within videos by decomposing videos into frames.[4]

The FIDE Candidates Tournament 2022 live page noted that the site used open-source code from Lichess and Stockfish and that analysis was "powered by Chessify".[5]

Chessify has been referenced by Oracle in the context of startups using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure; Chessify has also described using Oracle Cloud for parts of its service.[8][9]

No public, independent technical documentation of Chessify's full system architecture or proprietary implementation details is available.

Business model

[edit]

Chessify is distributed as a free-to-download app with in-app purchases and subscription options, according to its App Store listing.[2] The company also publishes subscription and usage information for its web service on its pricing pages.[10]

No public data is available for annual revenue, profitability, or detailed user counts verified by independent sources.

Partnerships and competitive chess

[edit]

In 2023, the Global Chess League announced a partnership with Chessify for live game analysis, describing Chessify's cloud servers providing live analysis during the league's broadcasts.[11]

In January 2024, the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF) announced an agreement with Chessify to sponsor the ICCF Champion's League tournament, including an award package in the form of Chessify packages and coins.[12]

In June 2024, FIDE reported that Chessify won the World Corporate Chess Championship finals.[13]

Reception

[edit]

Chessify has received coverage in Armenian media as an educational chess tool and as a product developed in cooperation with chess players and coaches.[3][6] Additional profiles have discussed its use of AI-related methods for scanning and search features, and the move toward cloud-based analysis tools.[4]

Independent review coverage focused on product quality, accuracy claims, or comparative testing against similar services is limited; no public data is available.
