David Slutzky
[edit]
David L. Slutzky (born August 15, 1955) is an American entrepreneur, environmental policy expert, and academic. He is the founder and former chairman of Fermata Energy, a company specializing in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. Under his leadership, Fermata Energy achieved significant milestones, including partnerships with major automotive manufacturers and advancements in bidirectional charging infrastructure.
Career
[edit]Fermata Energy
[edit]In 2010, Slutzky founded Fermata Energy with the vision of transforming electric vehicles (EVs) into distributed energy resources. The company's mission centered on developing technology that allows EVs to not only draw power from the grid but also supply energy back to it, thereby enhancing grid resilience and providing economic benefits to EV owners.[1]
A notable achievement under Slutzky's leadership was the development of the FE-15 bidirectional charger. In 2022, this charger became the first to receive approval from Nissan for use with the Nissan LEAF in the United States, marking a significant step in V2G technology integration with mass-market vehicles.[1]
Building on this success, Fermata Energy introduced the FE-20 charger, which received UL 9741 and UL 1741 SA certifications. These certifications signified compliance with safety and performance standards for bidirectional EV charging systems, further solidifying Fermata's position in the V2G market.[2]
Merger with Nuvve
[edit]In April 2025, Fermata Energy's assets were acquired by Nuvve Holding Corp., a global leader in V2G technology. The acquisition aimed to combine the strengths of both companies to accelerate the deployment of intelligent, bidirectional energy solutions. The new entity, operating as Fermata Energy II LLC ("Fermata 2.0"), focuses on scaling V2G technologies and expanding market reach.[3]
Slutzky expressed confidence in the merger, stating that Nuvve's scale and capabilities would amplify Fermata's impact in the energy transition landscape.[3]
Public Service and Academia
[edit]During the Clinton administration, Slutzky served as a senior policy advisor at the White House and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. At the White House, he coordinated the International Task Force of the President's Council on Sustainable Development, focusing on the environmental and labor implications of international trade agreements.
From 2006 to 2009, Slutzky was a member of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors in Virginia, representing the Rio District. He served as the board's chair in 2009.
Slutzky is also a research associate professor in the Science, Technology, and Society Program at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science.
