Denise Britz do Nascimento Silva is a Brazilian statistician specializing in official statistics, survey methodology, statistical modelling in the social sciences, small area estimation, and statistical education[1]. She is a Senior Associate Researcher at the Society for the Development of Scientific Research (SCIENCE) in Brazil [1] [2], and is a former Director of the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE)[3] which is part of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Silva completed her Bachelor's in Statistics at Escola Nacional de Ciências Estatísticas (National School of Statistical Sciences) in 1985. She then pursued further studies, attaining a Master of Science in Statistics from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – Institute of Mathematics and Statistics in 1992, where her dissertation focused on the application of dynamic linear models. Silva later earned her Ph.D. in Statistics from the Maths Department -University of Southampton, United Kingdom, in 1997, with a thesis on modeling compositional time series from repeated surveys.
From 1987 to 2019, Silva worked at the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE), where she held various positions, including Survey Methodologist and, later, Director of the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE)[3] [6] from 2011 to 2014. From 2007 to 2010, she worked as a principal methodologist at the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) and as a lecturer at the University of Southampton in 2006 [5]. After her retirement in 2019, she continued to contribute to education as a Voluntary Faculty member at ENCE until 2024[1][4][5]. In her current role at SCIENCE[1], Silva focuses on designing and implementing surveys, analyzing data, and developing statistical models, leading multidisciplinary teams to address various research challenges.
Silva has played a crucial role in the education sector, having supervised 41 MSc and 5 PhD students throughout her career. She is also known for her consultancy work on survey methods and statistical modeling for social issues, particularly in areas like unemployment, poverty measurement, human trafficking and the effects of environmental disasters. Her commitment to the development of statistical skills among civil servants has further cemented her reputation as a leader in statistical education in Brazil.
Leadership and Service
[edit]Silva is a member of several statistical associations in which she has been actively involved. She has served on the International Association of Survey Statisticians (IASS) in the roles of Vice President (2011–2013), Scientific Secretary (2015–2017), IASS president-elect (2017-2019), and IASS President (2019–2021)[7]. She is an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI)[8], and is currently one of the Vice-Presidents of ISI [6]. Over the years, Silva has served on the ISI Membership Elections Committee, the ISI Advisory Board on Ethics, and as a country representative for the ISI Committee on Women in Statistics[4]. As a member of InterAmerican Statistical Institute (IASI), she served as Vice President (2014–2016)[4][9] and as a member of the Brazilian Statistical Association (ABE), she was Treasurer (2004–2006) and Council Member (2010–2014)[10]. Silva is also a member of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR), and the Brazilian Association for Population Studies (ABEP)[4]. Silva has served as an associate editor of the Statistical Journal of the IAOS[1][4] and the Revista Brasileira de Estatística[1][4], and she was a member of the editorial board of the International Statistical Review (2015-2022)[6][4].

- United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) consultant to revise, further develop and finalize the Small Area Estimation for SDG Toolkit (2021-2022)[11].
- SCIENCE and the Human Trafficking Data Lab - Stanford University (2023-2024): survey methodologist for the Human Trafficking in Brazil Survey[12].
- SCIENCE and the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br) (2022-2023)[13] [14]. Survey methodologist coordinating a project to develop a statistical disclosure control strategy for microdata from the Brazilian ICT Enterprise Survey.
- SCIENCE and Fundação Getúlio Vargas (2021-2022)[15]. Survey methodologist and technical coordinator for the Participatory Household Survey (PDP - Pesquisa Domiciliar Participativa).

She has published extensively in the areas of survey methodology, small area estimation, labour market statistics, poverty measurement, and demographic analysis[4] [16] [17].
