International Society for Applied Biological Sciences (ISABS) Conference

[edit]

The International Society for Applied Biological Sciences (ISABS) Conference is a biennial international scientific meeting organized by the International Society for Applied Biological Sciences (ISABS) (Zagreb, Croatia), the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota, United States), and St. Catherine Specialty Hospital (Zagreb, Croatia). The event brings together researchers, clinicians, and industry representatives in the fields of molecular biology, forensic genetics, anthropological genetics, and precision medicine. Since its foundation in the late 1990s, the ISABS Conference has grown into one of the leading scientific gatherings in Central and Eastern Europe. The conference is notable for combining advances in biomedical sciences with applications in clinical medicine, forensics, and anthropology, and for its tradition of hosting Nobel Prize laureates as keynote speakers.[1][2]

History

[edit]

The ISABS Conference series was established in 1997 with an initial focus on forensic genetics and the application of molecular biology in forensic sciences. Over the years, its scope expanded significantly:

  • In the early 2000s, programs in cellular and molecular medicine were added, organized in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic.
  • By the mid-2000s, molecular anthropology became an integral part of the meeting, reflecting methodological links with forensic genetics.
  • Later programs incorporated individualized and precision medicine, highlighting breakthroughs in human genome research and translational applications.
  • The conference gradually became a multidisciplinary forum, addressing topics ranging from regenerative medicine, gene and cell therapy, and immunotherapy, to next-generation sequencing, pharmacogenomics, and artificial intelligence in medicine.

A hallmark of the conference is the “Nobel Spirit” session, which features Nobel laureates in medicine, chemistry, or related fields, engaging in public discussions on the role of science in society. [3]

Scope and Topics

[edit]

The ISABS Conference covers a broad spectrum of biomedical sciences, with emphasis on applied research and translational outcomes. Regular themes include:

  • Forensic genetics: DNA profiling, investigative intelligence, next-generation sequencing in forensic practice, and forensic genetic genealogy.
  • Anthropological genetics: Human evolutionary history, ancient DNA research, and ancestry inference.
  • Clinical and molecular medicine: Regenerative medicine, gene and cell therapy, immunotherapy, tissue engineering, and oncology.
  • Precision medicine: Whole genome sequencing, pharmacogenomics, and multi-omics integration.
  • Artificial intelligence in biomedicine: AI-driven diagnostics, clinical decision support, and ethical and legal implications of digital health technologies. [4]

Structure

[edit]

The conference typically includes:

  • Plenary lectures and keynote sessions by leading international experts, including Nobel laureates.
  • Parallel sessions in forensic science, molecular medicine, anthropology, and precision medicine.
  • Poster presentations and dedicated poster discussion sessions.
  • Workshops and satellite symposia on emerging topics.
  • Networking and social events, such as gala dinners and “meet-the-professor” sessions, designed to encourage informal exchange between senior scientists, early-career researchers, and students.

The event is structured to promote interdisciplinary dialogue between basic scientists, clinicians, and forensic practitioners. [1]

Awards

[edit]

ISABS promotes the involvement of young researchers and students through several award programs:

  • Moses Schanfield Young Investigator Award (MSYIA): Recognizes outstanding research contributions by scientists under the age of 35. Awardees receive financial support, a certificate, and the opportunity to present their work in a plenary session.
  • ISABS Future Scientist Award: Presented to Croatian high school students for exceptional essays in biology, genetics, chemistry, and related fields. The award is organized in collaboration with the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education and the Croatian Education and Teacher Training Agency. Winners are invited to attend the conference, meet Nobel laureates, and present their work.[5]

Publications

[edit]

The Croatian Medical Journal (CMJ) serves as the official journal of ISABS. Since 2001, special thematic issues have been dedicated to conference proceedings. These issues are indexed in major scientific databases, and the journal operates under a Diamond Open Access model, meaning there are no article processing charges.[6]

Impact and Significance

[edit]

The ISABS Conference is recognized as a regional hub for global scientific exchange in applied molecular biology. It has contributed to the dissemination of genomic technologies, fostered collaboration between clinical and forensic sciences, and supported the integration of artificial intelligence in precision medicine.

By bringing together leading researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and students, the conference has played a role in shaping biomedical research in Europe and beyond. Its combination of high-level science, public engagement sessions, and support for young investigators has established it as a model for interdisciplinary scientific gatherings.[7]
