Inter IIT Tech Meet is the annual technology and innovation competition organised by the Indian Institutes of Technology It is the flagship inter-collegiate technology meet of the IITs, where all the 23 IITs participate. The Tech Meet is one of the three major Inter IIT events, alongside the Inter IIT Sports Meet and the Inter IIT Cultural Meet. The event has been held annually since its inception in 2012. It is organized in December, where the event brings together teams from all the IITs to compete in various engineering domains, research challenges, development, and problem-solving events. In 2024, the event’s 13th edition was held at IIT Bombay and 14.0 was held at IIT Patna from 11th-14th of December, 2025.[1] The 14th edition was hosted by IIT Patna from 11–14 December 2025.[2]

Structure and format of the competition
[edit]Event categories
[edit]The Inter IIT Tech Meet divides its competitive events by preparation time, complexity, and expected output. These categories help ensure fairness across IIT contingents and allow teams to allocate resources strategically.
- High-Prep (HP)
Long-term engineering challenges typically requiring 4–10 weeks of work, with around 10–30 hours of effort per week. These problems often involve full proof-of-concept development, hardware or software prototypes, and large-scale design or implementation tasks.
- Mid-Prep (MP)
Moderate-duration challenges spanning 2–4 weeks, requiring approximately 8–20 hours per week. These events generally culminate in functional demos, simulations, or prototype presentations.
- Low-Prep (LP)
Short-term tasks lasting 4–10 days, where participants prepare concise submissions such as reports, concept notes, or lightweight prototypes.
- No-Prep (NP)
On-the-spot competitions where teams receive the problem statement during the event itself. These include hackathons, rapid prototyping exercises, and surprise tasks that test creativity and speed. Some editions also include a dedicated Research & Innovation (R&I) track, such as the Students' Academic Conference (SAC) or Engineers' Conclave (EC), where research papers, long-term academic projects, and poster presentations are evaluated separately from competitive engineering tasks.[3]
Team composition
[edit]Participation in different categories typically involves multi‑member teams, with varying team sizes depending on the scope and duration of the problem statements, as outlined by host institutes and official handbooks.
Problem domains
[edit]The Tech Meet spans a wide variety of technical and engineering domains. Past problem statements have covered: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science Robotics, Aerial Robotics, Aeronautics Cybersecurity, Software Engineering Quantitative Finance, Algorithmic Trading Product Design, Hardware Prototyping Sustainable and Clean Technologies Aerodynamics, spacecraft design, STOL-aircraft optimisation In addition, SAC and EC tracks enable research-oriented contributions beyond contest-style engineering.[4]
Submission timeline and judging format
[edit]For HP/MP/LP events, problem statements are released weeks or months in advance. Teams work on prototypes, technical reports, and demos, which are evaluated during the Meet. NP events are conducted entirely on-site. SAC/EC submissions follow academic-style review and presentation formats. Scoring varies by problem category and edition. HP and MP categories generally carry more weight in the overall evaluation.
Awards and General Championship
[edit]Each problem statement awards Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. These contribute to the overall institutional tally. At the end of the Meet, the IIT with the highest cumulative score across all events is declared the winner of the General Championship (GC). Industry-partnered problem statements often include additional recognition or prizes from sponsoring organisations.[5]
History
[edit]The Inter IIT Tech Meet was conceptualised around 2010–2011 during a Directors’ Conclave, where the IIT Council proposed the creation of a dedicated pan-IIT technical event to complement the long-established Inter IIT Sports and Cultural Meets. The first edition was held in 2012 at IIT Kanpur as a student-driven initiative with limited participation. According to internal accounts and founding documents, the Meet was envisioned as a platform to bring together “the best minds of the country” to collaborate on real-life engineering and technical challenges. Its objectives included promoting innovation, interdisciplinary teamwork, technology-oriented problem-solving, and research exposure across IITs. In the early editions, participation was smaller and the event was primarily student-driven, with many IITs still developing formal technical councils.
Growth and evolution
[edit]By 2016, most IITs had developed formal Science & Technology Boards or Technical Councils, following director-level recommendations from 2015–16.[6] By 2018, the Tech Meet had undergone major structural changes: industry and government labs began submitting problem statements, sponsorship grew significantly, and advanced domains such as UAV design, aerodynamics, and embedded systems were introduced. This marked a shift from a primarily student-led competition to a more industry-aligned and nationally recognised platform. In 2021, the Meet was held fully virtually for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling wider participation. Since 2022, the Meet has followed a more centralised structure, including: a unified Tech Meet Handbook, standardised evaluation formats, and a Problem Statement Review Board aimed at ensuring fairness and consistency across host IITs.

Organisation
[edit]Each edition of the Inter IIT Tech Meet is hosted by a selected IIT and is organised primarily by student teams, with institutional oversight. Responsibilities include coordination with participating institutes, problem statement curation, logistics, sponsorship, publicity, and event execution. Hosting responsibilities rotate among IITs, with the host institute managing planning and execution for that year’s edition.
Publicity and media outreach
[edit]Over time, the Inter IIT Tech Meet has gained increased visibility through institute communications, student publications, and online platforms. Host institutes typically manage branding, outreach, and post-event documentation, including result announcements and highlights.[13]
