Israel Júnior Borges do Nascimento (born 28 April 1995) is a Brazilian physician, professor, and researcher in clinical cardiology, digital health, and evidence-based medicine. He has held academic appointments at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) on digital health and sustainability projects.[1][2] His publications include systematic reviews, epidemiological studies, and global collaborations in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, npj Digital Medicine, and The Lancet Digital Health.[3]

Early life and education

[edit]

Borges do Nascimento was born in Pedro Leopoldo, Brazil, a city also known as the birthplace of the philanthropist Chico Xavier. At the age of 13, he was admitted to the Colégio Técnico da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (COLTEC/UFMG), one of Brazil’s most selective federal secondary technical schools, in the Clinical Analysis / Clinical Pathology program.[4] This early admission marked his introduction to laboratory sciences and clinical pathology.

During his first year at COLTEC, he joined the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) Junior Scientific Initiation program, receiving a scholarship that introduced him formally to research activities.[5] He also worked at the Instituto de Ciências Biológicas (ICB) at UFMG under the supervision of professors Jorge Luiz Pesquero and Mércia de Paula Lima.[6] Pesquero is a molecular biophysicist noted for his work on the tonin–angiotensin system and recombinant protein production, while Lima is a biochemist with expertise in proteomics.

In 2012, he represented UFMG at the XX Jornadas de Jovens Pesquisadores da Asociación de Universidades Grupo Montevideo (AUGM), presenting work on recombinant peptides. He was one of the youngest Latin American delegates at the conference.[7] In his final year at COLTEC, he took part in an international exchange program with the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (Argentina). His project on dengue evaluation was recognized as the best scientific project both at Córdoba and UFMG.[8]

Borges do Nascimento graduated in medicine from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), one of the leading universities in Latin America.[9]

During medical training, he participated in projects at the UFMG Telehealth Center and the Hospital das Clínicas under Professor Milena Soriano Marcolino.[10] His work addressed digital health applications in cardiology and emergency care, including pioneering studies on the management of in-flight medical emergencies that later received recognition in Brazil.[11]

He later pursued a Master of Public Health in Comparative Effectiveness Research at the Université Paris-Cité (CRESS, Hôtel-Dieu Hospital), under the supervision of professors Isabelle Boutron and Philippe Ravaud.[12] His dissertation, Temporal Analysis of ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Recommendations Supported by the ACC, AHA, and ESC, 1990–2023, examined the evolution of class of recommendations and levels of evidence in cardiology guidelines.

Career

[edit]

Borges do Nascimento began his scientific career at the age of 13, when he joined the ICB/UFMG as a junior research fellow supported by CNPq and the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG).[13]

At UFMG, he worked in the Telehealth Center of the Hospital das Clínicas, investigating applications of telemedicine in cardiology and emergency medicine. He later collaborated with the WHO Regional Office for Europe, working with David Novillo-Ortiz and Natasha Azzopardi-Muscat on digital health policy initiatives.[14] Since 2018, he has contributed to WHO-led initiatives on digital health systems, climate change, gender equity, antimicrobial resistance, and health system strengthening.[15]

At WHO, he has coauthored influential reports and articles on digital health adoption, barriers and facilitators for healthcare professionals, and the role of telemedicine in sustainability and health equity. Among these, his umbrella review in The Lancet Digital Health (2023) and overview in npj Digital Medicine (2023) have been cited in policy literature.[16][17]

In parallel, Borges do Nascimento has served as Professor of Internal Medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), combining teaching and mentorship with international collaborations in cardiology, evidence synthesis, and digital health.[18]

Research impact

[edit]

According to his Google Scholar profile, Borges do Nascimento has received more than 38,000 citations, with an h-index of 28 and an i10-index of 48 (as of October 2025).[19]

He has co-authored highly cited studies as part of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Collaborators.[20] During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led systematic reviews including a 2020 meta-analysis of coronavirus infection in humans (Journal of Clinical Medicine)[21] and a 2022 overview on health misinformation in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization.[22]
