Mozhgan Pazooki (Persian: مژگان پازوکی) is an Iranian documentary filmmaker and researcher. She began her media career in 1990 at Radio Tehran, producing and editing science-themed programmes for children and adolescents including Children and Adolescents Scientific Report and Buds (Ghoncheha).[1].
Later, she created and directed the television series Iran's Notables Today (مفاخر ایران امروز), a 26-episode documentary profiling pioneering Iranian scientists and academics[2]. The series was broadcast on IRIB channels 1 and 4 and won her a best director award in a 1996 readers’ poll by Cinema Newspaper[3].
She is also known for the underwater documentary Kalling (1998) about Kish Island pearl divers, which was later selected at the Parvin Etesami International Film Festival[4], the environmental film Farourgan Island (2014), and, after emigrating to Australia in 2019, the remote-production documentary Connecting Conversations (2020)[5].
In 2019 she directed and edited an exclusive interview film with actor Manouchehr Farid for Radio Neshat[6], and in 2025 her documentary Kalling was the subject of a Q&A event in Melbourne moderated by Sue Maslin AO[7].
Early life and education
[edit]While studying microbiology at university in Tehran, Pazooki joined Radio Tehran in 1989 and worked on several programmes that translated scientific news into stories for young listeners. She later shifted her academic studies to judicial law, earning a bachelor's degree. In 1991 she completed a two-year filmmaking course at the Ferdows Garden Film Centre in Tehran[8].
Career
[edit]Documentary television
[edit]In 1993 Pazooki proposed a documentary series about Iranian scholars to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). The resulting series, Iran's Notables Today, profiled more than 80 pioneering scientists and academics and aired on Channels 1 and 4 of IRIB[9].
Independent documentaries
[edit]After the success of her television work, Pazooki moved to Kish Island and produced short films and promotional documentaries for the Kish Free Zone Organization. During this period she directed Kalling (کالینگ), a documentary about a free diver who collected pearl oysters off Kish Island. The film critiques the exploitative pearl-diving industry and has been screened at festivals such as the Kish Documentary Film Festival and the International Parvin Etesami Festival[10]. Mozhgan Pazooki is considered the first Iranian woman to film underwater[11].
In 2014 she produced the documentary Farourgan Island after joining an environmental clean-up trip to the small Persian Gulf island of Farourgan. Filmed without a crew and using natural sound, the documentary was later sponsored by the Kish Free Zone Organization and the Marine Environment Protection Organization and screened at international marine conservation conferences[12].
Work in Australia
[edit]Pazooki emigrated to Australia in 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic she produced Connecting Conversations (2020), a documentary filmed entirely via Zoom that chronicles how newly arrived migrants in Melbourne continued English conversation classes online. The film premiered at Melbourne's Multicultural Hub as part of Diversity Week.[13].
She has also produced a series of testimonial and legacy films for high-profile Australian clients, including Marion Webster AM, Professor Bernie Neville, and Dr Tim Dalmal. These works highlight the cultural and intergenerational value of testimonial films, and Pazooki has stated her intention to continue this as a stable career in Australia.[14]
