Raft Films is a French film sales and distribution company established in 2019. It handles international sales and representation for independent and documentary films, particularly from Iran and the Middle East.[1][2][3]
History
[edit]Raft Films was founded in 2019 in France as an independent sales and distribution company for films from Iran and the wider Middle East. In its early years, the company handled both fiction and documentary titles, including the feature One Night in Tehran and the documentaries Khatemeh, Femininity, and One Pine and a Hundred Sparrows.[4] These productions were screened at international festivals such as the Kolkata International Film Festival, DOK Leipzig, and the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.[5] Between 2021 and 2025, Raft Films expanded its catalogue and represented several new Iranian and Middle Eastern filmmakers. Its titles appeared at major international events including the Shanghai International Film Festival, Hot Docs, Animafest Zagreb, Kerala International Film Festival, Asian World Film Festival, and the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival.[6]
In 2023, the company represented Cause of Death: Unknown, a feature directed by Ali Zarnegar, which premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival and was later selected as Iran’s official submission for the 2026 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.[7]
Other releases handled by Raft Films include the animated short The Route (2024), shown at Animafest Zagreb and the Kerala International Film Festival, and the feature documentary Heritage (2025), which premiered at Hot Docs before screening across Europe and North America.[6][7][8]
