Rukini Dimasa

Brief note on Barman Dimasa (Rukini Dimasa) in Karimganj, Assam

Origin of Rukini Dimasa Word Generally, the Barman Dimasa of Karimganj. they are basically known as Rukini Dimasa (Barman) or Rukinisa. The word "Rukni" is derived from Rukni River now which is located at Dhalai under Cachar district. Meaning of the word 'Rukinisa' Rukni means river another word 'Saa' which means 'Son'. So, the literal meaning of the word Rukinisa means 'Son' of the 'Rukni River'.

The word Rukinisa is a title given by our Dimasa king. In ancient period the Rukini Dimasa were living in both side of Rukni riverbank, and they were very hardworking people, and they grow a lot of grain from the Rukni riverbank. And they pay at last 40% of their grain to king as an annual text. In this connection they were unhappy with the king, rather they were very happy with their king. They believed that there king is very kind person, and he was ruling his kingdom very smoothly. According to them the river Rukni is like an "Mainuma" Goddess Lakshmi, but here question arise why they believed Rukini as an Mainuma (Goddess Lakshmi)? Because the term Rukni is a female word, the word Rukni is derived from 'Rukmini'. 'Rukmini is a Hindu Goddess and the first queen and chief wife of Lord Krishna. In ancient time Rukmini is an incarnation of the Goddess of prosperity and Lakshmi. And according to them the river it is none other than the form of Goddess Lakshmi because they believed that the river Rukni never disappointed them. Whatever they had grown near by the riverbank they got a lot of crops. And they believed that the grain near by the river are the blessings of the river Rukni so that's why they worship and preserved the Rukni river. And every year when they cut down their grain, the villager is going to organized unitedly a worship in the name of Rukni River & Shibrai and they also celebrate Busu Festival, in the month of January after cutting their crops.

Reason for Displaced

[edit]

When Dimasa king was suddenly death, after that the Cachar was under the controlled of British ruled. British imposed a high rate of tax as the production by the people living nearby 'Rukni' riverbank, due to which people are being exploited and the people couldn't tolerate the exploitation and they started to settle down to other places from Rukni Riverbank to another place, so that they could live a peaceful life. And they started settling down to different places like Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Tripura etc.

Reason for mixed Dialogue

[edit]

In ancient period the Rukni Dimasa or Ruknisas used pure Dimasa Dialogue. After displacement from Rukni Riverbank to another place like Karimganj and Hailakandi etc. and become a lack of communication from Cachar. As we know that in ancient period there is no proper road communication, and no proper technological communication, and during that time there is only one way of communication, it is through bullock cart or by foot. And according to language researchers in every 5 kilometers there is a little bit of changing in every language. So the Rukni Dimasa people which has settled at karimganj district faced communication gape from cachar approx. 200 kilometers, and the people are totally dependent on Jhum Cultivation and Daily wages, for their survival and they don't have another sources of income, due to which they don't have time to communicate. Most of the Ruknisas or Rukini Dimasas have been settled nearby Tripura and Mizoram bordar area, as there is not so much difference in Dimasa and Kokbrok Dialogue. After that they deliberately began to communicate to Tiprasa people, and they started matrimonial relationship with them. And some of the Rukini Dimasa people influence to write their sure name Barman and some other Tripura and Debbarman but till now they know their original Clan name like Hojaisa, Langthasa, Gorlosa, Bathari, Nunisa, Kemprai, Phonglosa, etc.
