The Girl Who Climbed the Mountains
[edit]The Girl Who Climbed the Mountains is a memoir by Swapna Ibrahim, published by Mankind Literature. The book chronicles her mountaineering journey, including her experiences in climbing some of the world’s most challenging peaks, and reflects on themes of resilience, ambition, and personal growth. It was first released at the Sharjah Book Festival and later formally launched in January 2025 during a cultural evening organized by the Qatar Indian Authors forum (QIAF) & Qatar International Book Fair in Doha, where Ibrahim was recognized for her contributions to literature and adventure sports.
Blending memoir and inspiration, the book follows Ibrahim’s mountaineering journeys, portraying them as both physical challenges and metaphors for life’s trials. It reflects on the “dreamer” within every individual—full of visions, goals, and a zest for living—while recounting her experiences from snow-covered Himalayan peaks to fiery volcanic landscapes. Through each summit conquered and trail explored, the narrative captures her rediscovery of purpose, resilience, and the magic of nature, encouraging readers to embrace their own aspirations and rise above setbacks. The Girl Who Climbed the Mountains was widely accepted and is now in its 5th edition. Her second book, Parvathangal Keezhadakkiya Penkutty (Malayalam), is set to be released at the end of August 2025.
Mountaineering
[edit]Swapna Ibrahim’s mountaineering journey is fueled by her ambitious goal of completing the Seven Summits Challenge—climbing the highest peak on each continent—in the shortest time possible. She has so far completed two of the seven:
Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) – Tanzania, December 21, 2022, via the Lemosho Route in 7 days. This climb was especially significant as she was accompanied by her 11-year-old daughter, Samarah, making them one of the few mother–daughter duos to summit Africa’s tallest peak together. At Uhuru Peak, the two proudly raised the Indian national flag, marking an emotional and historic moment for them.
- Mount Elbrus (5,642 m) – Russia, July 2025, a technical climb requiring advanced alpine skills.
- In addition to the Seven Summits climbs, Swapna Ibrahim has conquered several other notable peaks:
- Mt Thinchenkhang (6,010 m) – Part of the Kanchenjunga range, Sikkim (May 2025).
- Mt Cheget (3,769 m) – Russia (July 2025).
- Everest Base Camp (5,385 m) – Nepal, November 2023, completed in 7 days with minimal acclimatization.
- Kedarkantha Trek (3,810 m) – Uttarakhand, 2020.
- Chembra Peak (2,100 m) – Wayanad, Kerala.
- Cherappullu Hills (2,073 m) – Banasura range, Wayanad.
- Mt Batur (1,717 m) – Bali, Indonesia, 2016.
- Chauki Mountain – Georgia, 2019.
In total, Swapna Ibrahim has climbed and summited 41 peaks of varying altitudes across India and abroad. Beyond mountaineering, she maintains her mental and physical fitness through activities such as scuba diving, badminton, gym workouts, and swimming, which she credits as key to her endurance, resilience, and adventurous spirit.
Activities and Community Involvement
[edit]Beyond her mountaineering pursuits, Swapna Ibrahim is actively involved in a wide range of adventure sports and community initiatives. She has explored the depths of the ocean through scuba diving (up to 12 metres) and enjoys kayaking, long-distance swimming events, stand-up paddling, and horse riding. Her love for the outdoors extends to trekking expeditions, jungle walks, rappelling, and waterfall hikes in India and abroad.
Equally passionate about giving back, Swapna Ibrahim engages in community service, particularly in her hometown of Manjeri, Kerala, where she hosts programs for differently-abled children. She has also led charity initiatives for labour camps under the banners Doha Vibes and MMME Qatar, with a focus on providing support and resources during the month of Ramadan. Through her combined dedication to adventure and philanthropy, she seeks to inspire others to lead active, purposeful, and compassionate lives.
