Purpose?

[edit]

It remains unclear why this article is notable, nor in what way it is encyclopedic. It is simply a fact dressed as a stub. 121.45.68.62 (talk) 10:13, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The article provides independent, factual encyclopedic content not available elsewhere. It is helpful to determine that's it's a well-established publisher (not a for-profit publisher with no poor or sham peer review). -kslays (talkcontribs) 14:22, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Information is out of date

About BioOne

BioOne is a nonprofit organization that operates a digital library and aggregation service for scientific journals in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences. The organization was established in 1999 and is based in Washington, DC.

BioOne's stated mission focuses on sustainable scholarly publishing through collaboration between authors, nonprofit publishers, academic institutions, research libraries, and research funders. The organization aims to increase access to scientific research while supporting the operational needs of nonprofit and society publishers.

History

BioOne was founded in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization by five entities: the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), The University of Kansas, Greater Western Library Alliance, and Allen Press.

BioOne launched BioOne Complete, an aggregation of journal titles in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences in 2001. The service provides libraries with access to a collection of journals from independent and nonprofit publishers. According to the organization, its business model directs subscription revenue back to participating publishers. As of the most recent reporting, BioOne states it has returned more than $78 million to publishing partners since its inception.

Journals

BioOne’s flagship program is BioOne Complete, a subscription-based journal aggregation partnering with 157 publishers and containing over 200 journals in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences, including both subscription-based and open access titles. In 2026, BioOne will implement a Subscribe to Open pilot program involving 71 titles from 54 publishers.

eBooks

Launched in 2023, the eBooks program includes collections from partner organizations. The ESA eBook Collection features over 160 digitized titles from the Entomological Society of America. The CSIRO Publishing BioSelect Collection, introduced in 2024, contains over 200 titles in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences.

Ambassador Awards

Since 2018, BioOne has presented Ambassador Awards to early-career researchers who communicate their scientific work to audiences beyond the scientific community. More than 40 researchers have received the award, which recognizes authors published in BioOne Complete partner journals.
