Scanner
[edit]Hey, The edit to this def. is out of touch with acronyms currently used in vehicle diagnostics. An ECU might be called an ECM but my experience, selling scanners, has never been an acronym called a TCU. TCM for Trannsmission Control Modules is common. Upper Control Modules, Door Modules, Seat Control Modules are real Modules not Units. Climate Control Modules, Yes. I have never heard of a PCM mentioned in any scan tool literature. As for the definition, as modified, is not accurate. An automotive electronic control unit diagnostic tool. A scanner not only diagnoses the the faults in system modules it also access's all the sensors input to the modules found on the system. So.......... Maybe: A vehicle diagnostic tool. The original def.: Scanner (automotive), Generic reference to a wide variety of electronic diagnostic tool's used to read values stored in vehicle computer modules. Is defendably correct. - If you are primarily interested in stating a definition, then the proper place for that is scanner in Wiktionary. The purpose of a disambiguation page is not to provide a comprehensive definition, but to give readers enough of a hint to help find the precise article they are looking for by providing an internal link. If there isn't an existing article that closely relates to the topic, I suggest removing the item from here and placing it in Wiktionary. ✤ JonHarder talk 18:34, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Scanner (programming)
[edit]@General Ization, you claimed that there is no such thing as a "scanner" in programming, and reverted my edit including this, and then erroneously claimed that I should "add sources" to a disambiguation page, which is absurd. A "scanner" is in fact very common in programming languages:
java.util.Scanner, in Java, Kotlin, Scala[1]bufio.Scannerin Go[2]Scanner,StringScannerin Ruby[3]Foundation.Scannerin Swift[4]Scanf.scanfin OCaml[5]std::scanfin C and C++ (has its own page scanf)
Instead, do proper research before you claim another person's edit is "unmentioned" at target or even claim it is unsourced - simply because you are unwilling to do research for an overwhelmingly verifiable fact does not give you any right to revert others' changes. ~2025-36699-87 (talk) 03:40, 3 December 2025 (UTC)
- I claimed no such thing, and since the word "scanner" appeared nowhere at the article Standard input when you made your edit here, the inclusion of the link did not eliminate your responsibility to provide reliable sourcing for every edit you make. My instruction to you was to seek WP:CONSENSUS here; this is not how you do it. You are also confused about whose responsibility it is to find and cite sources that support your edits. Read and follow WP:BURDEN.
- Don't abuse me — or the encyclopedia. You will find it nets you a vacation from editing. General Ization Talk 04:23, 3 December 2025 (UTC)
- I have proven beyond a reasonable doubt above that a "scanner" refers to such a concept in computer programming, and you have demonstrated nothing to the contrary. You further claimed that I am expected to add citations to a disambiguation page, and I invite you to find a single disambiguation page here that has citations; I am sure you will be looking for a long time for such an example.
- The word "abuse" has a very specific definition. Don't accuse me of abuse towards anyone without substantial proof, and especially do not accuse me of abusing Wikipedia pages, whether that means vandalism or political soapboxing. If you think your thinly-veiled mob-boss threats will intimidate anyone, you are sorely mistaken. ~2025-36699-87 (talk) 07:45, 3 December 2025 (UTC)
