Final thoughts

Having been topic-banned in WP:ARBPIA5, and watching the seemingly purposely farcical 2026 Review of the PIA topic area in real time, I have some thoughts about Wikipedia I thought I would jot down for one last edit. I'm not too fussed about being topic-banned, it was always the most likely outcome of any prolonged effort in editing a topic like the one I focused on here. I'm not going to spend any time on showing why the process that ultimately led to my being topic banned was faulty, or why the so-called evidence that was waved at was bullshit, but suffice it to say that it *is* bullshit and that its being bullshit leads into the larger point. There's this idea that the Arbitration Committee is made up by dedicated volunteers who put the encyclopedia first. That they care about the outcomes of their votes, that they take their role seriously, that they engage with the evidence, but that is not true. It is even admitted to not to be true at times. One of the arbs wrote of the 2026 Review that there is a basic misconception among editors about how the committee comes to such decisions, that misconception being "that there must be something more behind the curtain". But there isn't. That even when the evidence relied on to impose the most severe sanction that can be imposed, a ban from the website, is shown to be utter and complete bullshit, it does not matter. Because the evidence does not matter. The only thing that matters is what a majority of a handful anonymous people want to do. If they want to ban you for writing the sky is blue they will do that because they can. It won't matter if you say well the sky actually is blue, all that matters is that this group of people, who you have no knowledge of their expertise or politics or really anything other than they spent a couple of years vandal fighting or answering edit requests, decided what they decided. It does not matter if the evidence is bullshit when the judges don't have to even pretend to read the evidence or any rebuttals to it. Any pretext will do to justify a decision that the decision makers have decided needs no justification for. I feel like I've done quite a bit of good in my decade plus of editing here. So I don't want to say that editing here was a waste of time, or that you shouldn't spend the time or effort doing so. Beyond the actual articles, which have been read by hundreds of thousands of people (for example), I've learned more about the topics I researched than I knew coming in, I've made some fantastic friends, and I can say I made an actual difference in how a subject I care about is covered in the top google result for basically any search term related to it. But if you do decide to spend the time and effort editing here, recognize that at any point that 7 unaccountable people can decide that's over and you don't have any recourse. That it will not matter what other editors say, it will not matter what the sources say, it will not matter what evidence exists or what counter-arguments are made. What will matter is what seven anonymous people on the internet feel like doing that day. And if you feel like that's a worthy use of your time, I wish you all the best. nableezy - 02:57, 25 January 2026 (UTC) |
