Captain Sumeet Sabharwal[1969-2025] was a veteran Indian pilot who died on June 12, 2025, when Air India Flight 171Air India Flight 171]], which he was Pilot in command, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India.He was having more than 15,600 hours of flying experience. He was one of the most senior pilot in Air India.
Personal life
[edit]Sumeet Sabharwal was born to Pushkaraj Sabharwal, a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (India) official .He was a resident of Jal vayu vihar,Powai,Mumbai.He got graduated from Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi. He joined Air India in 1994. Sumeet's mother passed away two years prior to the crash.A few hours before the tragic flight, Sumeet had a conversation with his father where he told him he wanted to stop flying and take care of him. Sumeet also promised his father that he would call him once he reached London. Sadly, he never made it that far as the plane crashed shortly after takeoff.
Aviation Career
[edit]Sumeet Sabharwal was an experienced pilot with about 15,600 hours of flying experience.He flew multiple aircraft types during his career, including the Airbus A310, Boeing 777, and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner .He was having Airline transport pilot licence(ATPL) which is the highest certificates for pilots. Apart from that he was also a Line Training Captain and was involved in flight safety checks. He narrated many pilots. He was having 8600 hours of flying experience in Boeing 787 Dreamliner ,the aircraft model involved in the accident.
On June 12, 2025, Captain Sabharwal was the Pilot in command of Air India Flight 171, a scheduled passenger flight from Ahmedabad Airport to Gatwick Airport,London. Along with him first officer Clive Ratanjeev Kunder who had around 3400 hours of flying experience. Clive was Pilot flying while Sumeet was the Pilot monitoring for the flight. Flight 171 was cleared for a full-length takeoff on runway 23, and lifted off at 13:38:39 IST after a 62-second takeoff roll. As the aircraft reached its maximum recorded airspeed of 180 knots (330 km/h; 210 mph) 3 seconds after takeoff, both fuel control switches sequentially moved from RUN to CUTOFF, 1 second apart. Both engines immediately shut down and stopped producing thrust. The Ram air turbine(RAT) deployed automatically and began producing emergency hydraulic and electric power. At 13:39:05 hrs one of the pilot issued Mayday call. One passenger survived, and early reports from the cockpit voice recorder and survivor accounts confirm Sumeet Sabharwal and Clive Kunder tried to glide the plane to minimize ground fatalities.
Legacy
[edit]Captain Sumeet Sabharwal's legacy is defined by his extensive career, professionalism, and final actions during the crash of Air India Flight 171. He was widely regarded by colleagues as a quiet, diligent, and humble individual who never complained and was always professional. In the final moments of the flight, Captain Sabharwal made a "mayday" call to air traffic control, signaling a life-threatening emergency. This was the last transmission from the cockpit before the crash. According to local residents and family friends, he have intentionally steered the aircraft away from a densely populated residential area , a move they believe saved hundreds of lives on the ground. For this, some locals have hailed him as a "hero."
