Drive information suggestion

[edit]

Hi, Dhtwiki ... I was just rummaging around at the main GOCE page and when I dragged my cursor over the Current or next blitz section of the tabs, I noticed that the information was still showing for May rather than for July:

"This Copy Editing Backlog Elimination Drive was a one-month-long effort of the Guild of Copy Editors to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy editing: those carrying the tag (also , , , , and their redirects) and those listed on the GOCE Requests page. It began on 1 May 2025, 00:00 (UTC) and ended on 31 May 2025, 23:59 (UTC)." Augnablik (talk) 05:19, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have to update things. Thank you for the notice. Dhtwiki (talk) 22:12, 27 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Leaderboard question

[edit]

@Dhtwiki, although I submitted the information about my two completed articles on July 31 before midnight GMT, I'm surprised that the leaderboard doesn't reflect the addition of the article I edited with the higher amount of words (21932). Just curious ... Augnablik (talk) 09:07, 2 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Augnablik: Having an entry on the leaderboard is usually done by editors themselves putting up the relevant numbers. It is not done automatically. I am aware of your longest article, which should get you at least a couple of leaderboard barnstars (longest- and 5k article), and will make the entries myself if necessary. Dhtwiki (talk) 22:28, 2 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Dhtwiki. I wasn't aware the leaderboard wasn't automatic. It felt awkward to ask that question, but it did seem the right thing to do in case (as I saw it) the board might have suffered the equivalent of a short circuit or something. Augnablik (talk) 00:34, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I made the changes to the leaderboard. But in May, someone else must have taken my article information and posted it, as I didn't do it myself, not yet even knowing that was expected.
Now, another question, related to the Oldest Article category: how does anyone know exactly how old his or her articles are? I assume that's calculated by the day and not just the month it was submitted to GOCE, right? Augnablik (talk) 10:36, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You get credit for four 5k articles when you do an article of more than 20k words. The edit where someone placed an article's copy edit tag is on the article history page, although sometimes, especially when edit is absent a good sommary, you have to do so searching (there is always the "Find addition/removal" link at the top of the page, which can prove useful). Dhtwiki (talk) 08:11, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I was supposed to put myself down as editing four 5k articles rather than just one? Good heavens, how are newbie GOCE editors supposed to know that, as well as that they are the ones who put themselves on the leaderboard? (unless I missed those directions …)
Augnablik (talk) 08:33, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
See footnote #2 below the leaderboard: "Number of articles of 5,000 words or more. An article of 10K+ words counts as 2, of 15K+ as 3, and so on." Dhtwiki (talk) 08:36, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay, sorry. I would, however, have expected that information included with all the other basic directions.
I still don't think I understand, though, about Oldest Article dating, which seems to be what you were addressing in the second sentence of your reply to me on the 4th at 08:11. I thought the term Oldest Article referred to how far back the request had come to GOCE for copy editing. But from your reply, it sounds as if it's when an editor places a copy edit tag on an article.
If so, it sounds as if we'd have to check the dates of everyone on the leaderboard, not just our own, to know if we qualified for one of the 5 places in each category.
And just by way of a caution about looking for an article's copy edit tag: from my own experience with both articles I submitted in this drive, that JL bot "got" me twice again after I first found out about what had first seemed possible vandalism, and removed the tag. This shows me that if we have to look at others' articles to find out when they started, we must remember to look a little further down for a possible earlier tag than when we first see one, in case the editor might have had to add another such tag later than when he or she first began working on the article.
Augnablik (talk) 09:05, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oldest articles aren't submitted to us. We take it upon ourselves to work on those articles with the copy edit tag, as well as a few others, unlike the requests page, where editors are actually asking for our help. Sometimes dates and word counts are checked, especially where there are discrepancies between the leaderboard and individual entries, as I am doing now, before barnstars are calculated; but for the most part these things are taken on good faith. Yes, it helps to inspect the history page for JL-bot to be at work or for others' working on the same article, if only to not have conflict with other copy editors (non-copy-editors may well get involved editing while the inuse template is up, but that would not lead to a clash over claiming credit for one of our drives or blitzes). Dhtwiki (talk) 09:40, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Here's what I'd like to suggest, Dhtwiki, to avoid taking more of your time to clarify calculating Oldest Articles for the leaderboard just for me:
— Could you, or someone you appoint, write and post in the directions for everyone exactly what steps to take to calculate our Oldest Article totals?
— And close to these steps, could there be a brief disambiguation between (1) the Oldest Articles category on the leaderboard and (2) the articles we're supposed to mark O* on our list of completed articles to indicate they're Oldest Articles? (assuming I'm correct in making this distinction, but from what I understand at this point, there really seems to be one) Augnablik (talk) 12:34, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
