Time discrepancy

[edit]

@Dhtwiki, I just went back to the "Women in Music" History page to see if anyone else had worked on the article since the July drive ended, and to my shock found that some of the edits I was doing the night of July 31 appeared as posted in the wee hours of August 1. Although I'd re-checked my time differential with GMT in advance to be sure when it would be midnight UTC in my time zone, and was confident I was finishing the c/e of the article within the allotted time limit, nine of my edits are shown as posted past midnight. The drive is over, of course, but I thought I should mention in case it might look as if I had taken undue liberty.

I'm posting this message here on your Talk page because on the Coordinators' page where we post questions and such, there's a message about the August blitz drive and I didn't want this topic to throw off the sequence. Augnablik (talk) 16:10, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) GMT is not the same as UTC. I recommend going to Preferences > Gadgets > Appearance and enabling "Add a clock to the personal toolbar". – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:15, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, my, @Jonesey95! I didn't know that till I just checked on what you'd said, and found that GMT is measured from midday but UTC from midnight. That was an eye-opener. At any rate, I did want to own up to the unanticipated overrun. Augnablik (talk) 17:41, 15 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
GMT is the same as UTC, the former often designating a start at midnight (if there is a noon start, how does it relate to the civil date?). I always wait a day, at least, before starting to calculate barnstars, although that's to accommodate people late with posting results completed on time. However, if people have to make a few late edits, well, that's usually allowable, especially if it's inadvertent and if the editor is as conscientious with their editing as you seem to be.
This topic probably is better posted at a GOCE newsgroup, especially if the topic will generate information helpful to others. You could have started this topic as a subsection to a section relevant to the July drive, or, alternatively, place it on the drive-specific talk page, rather than the coordinators' talk page. Dhtwiki (talk) 05:04, 16 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
To me, it seems my original message was better directed just to you coordinators and just in regard to this particular drive. But now with Jonesey95's clarification about GMT and UTC, I'd be happy to write a new message about that for other GOCE editors. If you tell me where to find GOCE newsgroups, I'll do that. Augnablik (talk) 06:11, 16 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's fine here. If necessary, it can be copied to another group, but I don't think that's necessary. The distinction between GMT and UTC is certainly a fine one and doesn't need discussion amongst copy editors at this point, as it is just of matter of remembering when UTC midnight, which changes with daylight saving time, is in one's time zone. Dhtwiki (talk) 06:26, 16 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The only reason I asked about GOCE news groups is when you said the time differential topic" is probably better posted at a GOCE news group, especially if the topic will generate information helpful to others." If it's unlikely to be helpful, then no need to bring it up at all.
Frankly, it wouldn't have been of importance to me either, except that if I'd been aware of it during this particular drive I'd have calculated the time differential more accurately. And I may never again be working on a drive on the last day. Besides, after hearing that you extend the time a little beyond the deadline anyway, an extra few hours may not even matter anyway.
So, let's put "30" on this topic. 🤗 Augnablik (talk) 07:03, 16 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Dhtwiki is right that GMT is basically the same as UTC, but saying "GMT" is imprecise, as people sometimes use it to mean "the time in the UK", which can be UTC+1 during summer time. It's better to just say "UTC" when you mean UTC, and to use the gadget to figure out the UTC time. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:48, 16 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

August GOCE Blitz

[edit]

Hi - Thanks for the totals! If some points should not be used for August, should my total this month be adjusted to 9,080, hence a Cleanup barnstar? - Pac Veten Pac Veten (talk) 00:06, 26 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't yet entered the totals for this blitz. The total you see at the barnstar page, 8767, is from June. 8869 + 313 = 9182 should be your total for this blitz. Dhtwiki (talk) 00:36, 26 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Preferred place for GOCE drive questions & comments

[edit]

@Dhtwiki, I'd just like to be sure where we're supposed to write questions and comments about GOCE drive work. When I was a drive newbie some months ago, I remember being told it was at the Coordinators page; but Mark Gould raised a question on the September Backlog Drive Talk page about the double editing issue of the Judy Garland article, and that location certainly makes sense.

I'm writing you about this here rather than on the same page where Mark asked the question because it's a more private area. Augnablik (talk) 11:20, 18 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Augnablik:: The September 2025 drive's talk page is an appropriate place to discuss the double editing that happened, since the scoring is peculiar to that drive. I would not suggest that the coordinators' talk page would be appropriate. Can you point to the discussion where that suggestion was made? The double editing of the Garland page underscores the importance of placing a {{Working}} template on the requests page when one first starts working on an article, and that discussion would be appropriate to the requests talk page. Dhtwiki (talk) 00:20, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's been so many months ago now since I asked where to post questions and comments, Dhtwiki, that I'd have to go back in my History page trying to locate the exact message. Frankly, I thought it was from you — as I'd probably have started at the top to try to find the answer.
It definitely seemed a bit odd to me at the time that questions and comments should be posted at what would seem like a page just for coordinators; but not hearing otherwise, I kept on doing so. If I should have been posting elsewhere, though, why was I allowed to post all those messages at the Coordinators page for not just one but several backlog drives? 😂
Now I need to check on one more related detail with you, as you said in your reply above that the double-editing discussion would be appropriate to the Talk page for Requests. But the initial post about that, made by Mark Gould, was done at the Talk page for Backlog elimination drives/September 2025. And when I checked yet another GOCE Talk page, I saw similar discussions going on there too. So, then, this would seem to mean that questions and comments can be made at ANY of the GOCE Talk pages.
Instead, wouldn't it be easier for you coordinators to create a sort of Teahouse/Help Desk just for GOCE-related discussions? Augnablik (talk) 06:13, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Big Ben

[edit]

Hi Dhtwiki, I hope you're well.

I thought it was worth leaving you a quick message to emphasise that my edit to Big Ben was only made with the intention of encouraging the discussion I opened a week ago; I was expecting it to be reverted (would that be DBRD?), so I hope it didn't appear disruptive. I can see your perspective, but please know I have no intention of further editing the lead paragraph.

All the best, A.D.Hope (talk) 11:25, 21 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
