Question from Anthonymrainey (13:06, 17 September 2025)

[edit]

does wikipedia have any rules about self-consistency or anything? this article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Pommern) states SMS Pommern was "the fastest pre-dreadnought battleship in the world" and describes its speed as 19 knots but this article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_battleship_Regina_Margherita) states the Regina Margherita had a speed of 20 knots. It's so glaringly obvious that 20 knots is faster than 19 knots that I'm tempted to edit it, but I really want to be careful because I'm new to Wikipedia. --Anthonymrainey (talk) 13:06, 17 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The issue isn't internal consistency, it's just probably what the work being referenced says. The authors of "Die deutschen Kriegsschiffe" likely weren't aware of the Regina Margherita when they made that statement. Rather than removing it, the statement could be attributed (the Pommern was described as the fastest pre-dreadnought battleship in the world), but if you should make the direct comparison is a better question for the military history editors. Try asking on the talk page? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:SMS_Pommern -- Reconrabbit 13:43, 17 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I asked on the talk page. Is there any way to draw the attention of military history editors to my question? Anthonymrainey (talk) 14:43, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Sullyaire (15:54, 18 September 2025)

[edit]

Hiya! I had a quick question about a page I did some copy-editing on! It said the page was proposed for deletion. What does that mean? --Sullyaire (talk) 15:54, 18 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. It looks to me that the reason for proposed deletion did not apply, since the subject was notable for more than just one event. Following your copy editing it looks to be in good shape (if a bit short). Anyone can remove a "proposed deletion" template if they believe it to not apply, or if a full discussion is required. Thanks for your work. I'll recommend that the person who proposed the deletion research subjects further when considering deletion, since they are a very new editor. -- Reconrabbit 16:55, 18 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I see, that makes sense! Thank you! Sullyaire (talk) 20:17, 19 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Natureexplorer11 on Woolworth Building (11:46, 27 September 2025)

[edit]

I’ve never edited before and I’m not even sure which is correct but I notice a discrepancy On the Woolworth bldg page it states FW Woolworth immigrated to the US in 1886 but when you link to FW Woolworths bio page it states he was born in New York in the 1850’s --Natureexplorer11 (talk) 11:46, 27 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I investigated this by checking the references. The author of this page was confused by the text "he first came to New York City in 1886". It doesn't point out that he was born and lived in upstate New York for his whole life before then. Since I was right there - I made some changes. Does that look right to you?

Hi! Please could you help with my draft edit? It’s a page on British TV Personality Andrew Jenkins but I think the title is a duplicate of an existing page. How do I change the draft page title form Andrew Jenkins to Andrew Jenkins (British TV Personality) please? Thank you :-) --Mrjames mac (talk) 14:00, 28 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia @Mrjames mac:. I've moved your draft to Andrew Jenkins (TV personality). I have also copy-edited your draft. I would highly advise that you either find a source for his early life or remove that information. It also reads somewhat promotional, especially in the Personal life section (it is rather unencyclopedic to describe how he "proved doctors wrong" and that it was a "horrendous" accident or "monumental" achievement. I made edits to improve conformation to the Manual of Style. -- Reconrabbit 14:13, 29 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from ScottishRecords (12:47, 1 October 2025)

[edit]

Hi, how are you? I’ve recently just joined Wikipedia so I can edit a particular page. There is an issue with the persons place of birth. It keeps erroneously being changed to an incorrect place of birth and then using a self-referential link where the incorrect place of birth is listed. Is there anything I can do to upload an actual birth certificate and use that as a primary source so the place of birth can’t keep getting changed (by the same person might I add)? --ScottishRecords (talk) 12:47, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Unfortunately I don't believe you can upload a birth certificate anywhere to prove a person was born in a particular place. If the Press and Journal article is incorrect, then a primary source (such as Kenny Boyle talking about his place of birth in an interview or social media) would be sufficient to change it. Wikipedia does not necessarily reflect what is true in the world, only what has been published. -- Reconrabbit 13:23, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect it is Kenny himself who is editing this and continuously perpetuating this error, unfortunately. I understand that Wikipedia relies on secondary sources, but as I’m new to this, I was wondering what recourse I can use to correct this? ScottishRecords (talk) 14:05, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you believe that the editor adding this information from an IP address near Glasgow has a conflict of interest with the subject, you can ask them or make note of it on the article's talk page, but I do not see a clear road to change the article to anything other than what has been reported and published by the subject and news sources unless you can show a published (newspaper or otherwise, not self-published) work that convincingly disproves the current claims. -- Reconrabbit 14:13, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I’ve emailed the newspaper that he uses for the citation to see if they would edit the article if I provide evidence, which I have. Maybe I’ll be able to get somewhere with that. Can’t thank you enough for the help. I know it seems a fickle matter, but they’re appropriating a cultural identity that doesn’t belong to them ScottishRecords (talk) 14:22, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@ScottishRecords: Saying "then a primary source (such as Kenny Boyle talking about his place of birth in an interview or social media) would be sufficient to change it" is misleading. Dates and places of birth are frequently the subject of lies by the people involved, so it is not safe to assume that what a person says is true. Looking at the history of the article I think it may well be that you are right in thinking it is Kenny Boyle himself who has been making the change, though of course it isn't possible to be certain. JBW (talk) 14:49, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I did not realize that the point of contention was that the subject was not being truthful about his own provenance. I am far more used to these things needing correction and the subject not realizing they could easily clarify their own date of birth, birthplace, name, etc. and recommending changes per WP:ABOUTSELF. I think the response I gave at 14:13 is still accurate, though. -- Reconrabbit 15:02, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
sorry if I didn’t make that clear before. Kenny, who I am almost certain is editing his own page, during interviews absolutely lies about where they were born and then when editing this Wikipedia page he uses these published interviews as citations and the lie becomes established fact. Pretty peculiar thing to do. ScottishRecords (talk) 15:32, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

European hare

[edit]

Hello. Are there any updates for the genetics and taxonomy of the species? I found this LittleJerry (talk) 21:55, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have not looked into the genetics of Lepus europaeus at all. In my sandbox I have a fairly up to date set of cladograms from Iraçabal et al., 2024, but because the figures are so hard to interpret in that paper I didn't realize until now that Matthee's 2004 work describes the divergence date between hares and Oryctolagus cuniculus to be 11.8 Ma. Iraçabal puts some distance between L. europaeus and Lepus capensis, but puts its closest relative as Lepus habessinicus, which is sympatric with (and has a few features that confuse it with) L. capensis, similar to the European hare (albeit with a more restricted distribution). They also agree with Lepus granatensis being closely related to the European and Abyssinian hares, but otherwise don't place the European hare in the same clade as the Cape hare... Based on this article alone I don't think the consensus on that page has changed much (that populations are interbreeding in the Near East, but there is still a superficial boundary between the Cape and European hare species in that region). PaleobioDB has the oldest L. europaeus specimens at 0.77 Ma and the oldest L. capensis at 2.58 Ma (barring an outlier at 7.2 Ma from SA), which could be of some use since neither article says much about their first appearances. I dread having to work on the Cape hare's taxonomy. Sorry this is so long, and a lot of guesswork too. -- Reconrabbit 00:11, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Would you be able to update the taxonomy section and create a cladogram of the European hare and its closest relatives? LittleJerry (talk) 00:33, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'll make an effort. -- Reconrabbit 03:04, 18 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. How about trimming the cladogram down to the European hare and its seven closest relatives. LittleJerry (talk) 17:33, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to but don't have a good way to refer to the other hares since they aren't confined to a particular region on any end of the cladogram. Can the leaves just be removed? -- Reconrabbit 17:54, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The clade that starts with the most recent common ancestor of the europaeus/habessinicus clade and comus/oiostolus clade seems like a branch that can be isolated. LittleJerry (talk) 18:14, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is harder than I thought it would be. Thoughts? User:Reconrabbit/sandbox/clades -- Reconrabbit 19:38, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Chiswick Chap, could you isolate the branch? LittleJerry (talk) 20:01, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
European hare doesn't have any cladogram atm... could you put the cladogram you are interested in on my talk page, with a description of what you want me to do to it, and I'll fix it for you. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:04, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Achampman (10:47, 7 November 2025)

[edit]

how do i start a biography page --Achampman (talk) 10:47, 7 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Achampman:, welcome to Wikipedia. Please take your time to learn how to edit and practice tasks for beginners before you create your first article, which requires research and learning Wikipedia's policies to do in a way that won't get immediately deleted. -- Reconrabbit 14:22, 7 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Aldosery (03:25, 8 November 2025)

Hello

I have a 2013 Corolla Altis XLi 1.6 Manual transmission

I want to know the engine and transmission code so I can search to buy engines, but of course I don't know this

Model ZRE141L-AEFDKV --Aldosery (talk) 03:25, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Aldosery, I have no idea, since I know nothing about the mechanics inside cars. It is probably at least a type of VVT-i. Maybe try asking the reference desk. Please know, that Wikipedia is not a forum. -- Reconrabbit 04:38, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Kornelia Rudkowska at Emily Revolutionary Marketing Group (18:49, 12 November 2025)

Hello! This is my first time writing on wikipedia. Do you mind checking my sandbox and article about Cattywampus game and give me some suggestions before I submit it for review? --Kornelia Rudkowska at Emily Revolutionary Marketing Group (talk) 18:49, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Kornelia Rudkowska at Emily Revolutionary Marketing Group, I took at look at your sandbox. You may be in a tough spot right now - the subject of the article you have written is currently not notable, as the main sources being used to write it are PR Newswire and LNGFRM. The former has been determined by the community to be an unreliable source due to its lack of editorial oversight. It does not look like there is any similar oversight at LNGFRM either - it is unclear who is writing their articles, since everything is written by "LNGFRM Team". Your other sources establish that the subject exists but not that it is notable for any reason. That's my perspective. -- Reconrabbit 18:59, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for your feedback. I have this article as one of the sources as well, what do you think? https://business.cwcchamber.com/business-directory/Details/dna-games-inc-3955495 Kornelia Rudkowska at Emily Revolutionary Marketing Group (talk) 20:12, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from JeannetteBlake (19:23, 13 November 2025)

[edit]

Hi there! I wanted to introduce myself. I'm an aspiring journalist in Maryland. Do you have any suggestions for pages that I can edit as I start out? --JeannetteBlake (talk) 19:23, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

He @JeannetteBlake, welcome to Wikipedia. I can provide a few pointers for you. Judging by your work on Draft:Annapolis Maritime Museum, I'd become familiar with several of this site's policies, namely reliable sources and verifiablility. While you have the latter here, since the museum is expected to be mostly accurate about its own goings on, the former is lacking since the museum isn't going to be an independent observer of itself. Try looking for newspaper and library sources on the subjects you want to write about. I was able to find one. -- Reconrabbit 19:48, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Saffronarchitect (10:01, 14 November 2025)

[edit]

Hello Reconrabbit,

I have been looking at companies that offer to create Wikipedia pages for £1000's but they generally seem like scams.

I have been wanting to create a new page for my Grandfather (died 1994) for decades.

He was a famous comic artist, published successful. But there is not much about him online. I want to create him a page before it is too late and he disappears from history (online).

Can you help give any advice for a newbie?

So many thanks for any help you can give.

Rebecca --Saffronarchitect (talk) 10:01, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Saffronarchitect, welcome to Wikipedia. You are correct: Any person or service offering to create a Wikipedia page for a fee is a scam. My advice for you is to look for published works about your grandfather and his work and collect them in a draft. Help:Your first article also has some useful information. You can compare other articles like Jorge Alderete for inspiration (see how it references offline works like Reforma) - though I advise that if your grandfather is not notable in the Wikipedia sense of the word, there is nothing anyone can do here to change that. -- Reconrabbit 14:33, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. That is really helpful advice and good to know that my hunch about paid page creators was correct. The draft feature is really good to know about and I will make a start there.
Offline referencing, also good to know about.
He worked for DC Thomson (UK media company) for 50 years drawing some of Britains best loved children's comic characters and their resident archivist has found lots of information on him for me. This is all offline. But verifiable.

I will get to work. Thank you again. Saffronarchitect (talk) 14:41, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
