据ABC新闻引用的宣誓书，双方事前无任何交流。列车出发约4分30秒后，嫌疑人从连帽衫中取出折叠刀（英语：Pocketknife），从后方向扎鲁茨卡颈喉部连刺三刀，其中至少一刀命中颈部[21]。受害者最初呈震惊状态，捂住颈部与面部，此时血液开始涌出，同车厢乘客虽目睹经过但未立即意识到事态严重性，数秒后，扎鲁茨卡瘫倒在其座位前的地板上。[22][19][23]
