유가 (힌두교)

유가는 힌두교에서 일반적으로 시간의 시대를 나타내는 데 사용된다.[1][2]

리그베다에서 유가는 세대, (길거나 짧은) 기간, 또는 두 사물을 연결하는 멍에를 의미한다.[3] 마하바라타에서는 유가와 칼파 (브라흐마의 하루)라는 단어가 창조와 파괴의 순환을 묘사하기 위해 상호 교환적으로 사용된다.[4]

후기 베다 문헌에서는 "유가"와 "시대"라는 단어가 일반적으로 네 세계 시대의 순환인 차투르유가 (차투르 유가로 발음)를 나타낸다. 예를 들어, 수리야 싯단타와 바가바드 기타 (마하바라타의 일부)에서 그러하며, 다음 하위 시대 중 하나의 이름으로 명시적으로 제한되지 않는 한 그렇다: 크리타 (사트야) 유가, 트레타 유가, 드와파라 유가, 또는 칼리 유가.[1][5][a]

"유가"라는 용어는 숫자 4를 나타낼 수 있다. 초기 인도 천문학에서는 추분점의 태양과 달의 합으로부터 시작되는 5년 주기를 의미했다.[8]

유가 (산스크리트어: युग)는 "멍에" (두 사물을 연결하는 것), "세대", 또는 시대와 같은 "기간"을 의미하며, 그 고대 철자는 yug이고, 다른 형태인 yugam, yugānāṃ, yuge는 yuj (산스크리트어: युज्)에서 파생되었으며, 이는 yeug- (인도유럽조어: 직역: '결합하다 또는 통합하다')에서 유래한 것으로 여겨진다.[9]
