At around 11:57 a.m. on May 27, 2025, an explosion occurred at the Shandong Youdao Chemical Company Ltd. factory in Weifang, Shandong, China, killing at least 5 people, injuring 19 people, and leaving 6 missing. The explosion occurred at 11:57 a.m., with such force that it shattered the windows of nearby buildings and produced a huge column of smoke.

Shandong Youdao Chemical Company Ltd. is a chemical company established in 2019 and located in Renhe Chemical Park, Weifang, Shandong. The company focuses on the production of pesticides and pharmaceutical intermediates using continuous flow technology. It is a subsidiary of the Homag Group and is considered the world's largest producer of chlorantraniliprole, with an annual output of approximately 11,000 tons.[1]

Explosion

The explosion occurred at 11:57 am on May 27, 2025, inside a workshop at the factory. Witnesses reported that the explosion produced a huge fireball and thick smoke rose hundreds of meters into the air. The shock wave from the explosion shattered windows in residential areas within 3 kilometers, and the vibrations could still be felt 6 kilometers away.[2]

Casualties and damage

As of May 27, 2025, the explosion left five people dead, 19 injured, and six missing. The explosion caused significant damage to the factory and surrounding area, including broken windows and structural damage to nearby buildings.[3]

Response

After the accident, the local fire department dispatched 55 fire trucks and 232 rescue workers. The Ministry of Emergency Management also deployed the National Fire Rescue Team and professional workplace emergency response units to assist in the search and rescue work, which continued into the night.[3][4]

Investigation

The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. Authorities have not yet released any information on the cause of the explosion.
