I cannot add my picture with select media files or flickr
[edit]I cannot add my pictures, does someone know why this happens? Foxfoxfoxfoxfox (talk) 14:46, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- Assuming you used the Upload Wizard, how far did you get? Are stuck on the upload step? Were there any error messages? --rimshottalk 15:16, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- I couldnt click the Select Media Files To Share Button because it would'nt work and not even Flickr worked and there wasn't even an error message Foxfoxfoxfoxfox (talk) 15:20, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- I guess this didn't start to work in the meantime. The upload button is really a normal file upload, so you should at least get your browser's file selection. If this doesn't even work, that's quite strange. Can you upload files anywhere else? What browser are you using? --rimshottalk 14:29, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

Download content
[edit]Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am currently working on a short film and need to include a news clip about Brexit to play in the background of a scene. Is it possible to download video content from your website? If so, how does the process work? I would also like to confirm if I am permitted to download and edit the video for my project. Thank you for your help. Floren1988 (talk) 18:16, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Floren1988: It would help if you would say what video you are talking about but the answer in general with reference to permissions is, yes, as long as you conform to the relevant license(s).
- To download, normally on the file page you would click on "original file". Just what you do from there will depend on your browser, but typically that will open the video in the browser, and you can then right-click and select "Save video as..." - Jmabel ! talk 20:42, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your quick reply.
- These are the videos I am taking about:
- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brexit_Protests.webm
- When I save the video the file I download is .webm, is there any way I can get an .mp4 or .mov file in HD?
- How should I credit you?
- Thank you so much for your help!
- Carlos. ~2026-43287-9 (talk) 20:51, 20 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Floren1988: There are plenty of tools with which you can convert video formats; I can't particularly recommend one over another, but someone else may have thoughts on that. Given that the file both come from Flickr (sources linked on their respective file pages), you might want to download them in whatever format is available on Flickr, and leave Commons and our particular transcoding out of the picture entirely.
- You don't credit us, you credit the party that licensed the video. In this particular case, that would be "ChiralJon, CC BY 2.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0>, via Wikimedia Commons" (with the "via Wikimedia Commons" really being just a courtesy). In general, I suggest you read closely pages from which you are downloading material. The file pages are each quite clear and specific about the terms of the licenses they offer, and content on Commons may have quite a variety of licenses; conveniently, it is the same license and author for both of these files.
- By the way, it would really be helpful if you would stay logged in when responding to a discussion you started. I'm assuming Floren1988 and ~2026-43287-9 are the same person, but things like this can cause a lot of confusion. - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Jmabel Sorry for the late reply! Yes, Floren 1988 and 2026-43287-9 are the same person! Sorry, I'm new here. Thank you so much for your help! Have a nice week! Floren1988 (talk) 09:21, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
Overwrite Pictures
[edit]Hello, I uploaded the wrong pictures last week via commons and trying to overwrite! The thumbnail old picture still shows up on the file and, if I click on date/time that's the updated picture from today. They are not matching. When will the updated picture show up on the file. Can you help? Thanks F.E. Johnson Jr. (talk) 20:48, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
- The first two I tried seem to have their thumbnails updated already. It might be just your browser cache, using Ctrl-F5 should refresh the images on your screen. If you have problems with a particular image, you could try purging the cache. --rimshottalk 21:50, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
- Bizarre, if I click on the trophy picture that you show on the left. The ruler on the left of the picture (old picture) shows up as I changed it to the new picture without the ruler on the left side. F.E. Johnson Jr. (talk) 21:58, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
- Example: File:Forest E Johnson 1936 won Albany - New York Motorboat Race, Inboard, Class E.jpp
- It was updated today with the new file picture, but the old pictures show up with the ruler on the left side in the picture. Am I doing something wrong? F.E. Johnson Jr. (talk) 22:09, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
- @F.E. Johnson Jr.: It's just a caching issue. Look at it with any other device or browser. - Jmabel ! talk 01:10, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, thank you. How can I delete the older version as they still show up? F.E. Johnson Jr. (talk) 18:43, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- @F.E. Johnson Jr. Because it is a caching issue, the old versions which are held in the cache will expire when the cache expires, you are neither able to do anything nor need to do anything. w:en:Cache (computing) will give you more information than you ever wanted to know. 🇵🇸🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦🇵🇸 19:16, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi F.E. Johnson Jr. I don't think you can delete the older versions; only a Commons administrator like Jmabel can do that. I also don't think there's a need to delete anything. You can try clearing your browser's cache, but I don't think anything needs to be done here at Commons. For future reference, though, I think it's OK to upload updated versions and crops like these as separate files; you can then conenct the files together using templates like Template:Retouched image or Template:Extracted from. Uploading such things as separate files can make it easier for others to use the version they prefer. -- Marchjuly (talk) 19:20, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- For File:Forest E Johnson won 1934 Floridian Hotel Trophy Regatta.jpg, it is clearly a different photo of the same object, so I've hidden that. For File:02 FEJ First Win.jpg, the claim of "own work" is implausbile (certainly you did not take a photo in 1934), so I don't see how you could possibly be in a position to offer a CC license. Until that is sorted out, I'm not touching it. - Jmabel ! talk 20:25, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- This is a picture provided by his son as he has his collection of photos. Can we not use them? F.E. Johnson Jr. (talk) 15:22, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- @F.E. Johnson Jr. Each photograph needs to be treated on its individual merits. For some there is heredity; for some copyright was not asserted (in geographies and eras which require assertion); for some copyright has expired; for some the copyright will persist.
- That's fine but requires research and, where appropriate, permissions from the copyright owners lodged with COM:VRT.
- The copyright owner is usually, but not always, the photographer. It is wisest to start by assuming that the photographer owns the copyright. However, as an example, news media pictures are often taken under a contract which passes the copyright to the news media. When contracting with a photoshoot photographer is can be that the contract transfers the copyright to the person/organisation commissioning thge photoshoot.
- Thus we return to dealing with each picture as an individual item. 🇵🇸🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦🇵🇸 16:16, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- @F.E. Johnson Jr. I find I am displeased. https://www.forestjohnson.com/yachting/ suggests that an editor with that username on enWiki will know about the laws of copyright.
- w:en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Forest Johnson Photography tells me that this is likely to be you.
- You appear to be being economical with the truth over this. An uncharitable person might view that as deceptive. Having worked with you in good faith to seek to help because of my own interest in boat designs and designers, I feel badly let down. 🇵🇸🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦🇵🇸 18:25, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

common domain pictures
[edit]Photographic pictures taken in 1880s are now I believe deemed public domain. Leopoldo Traversi also died in 1941. It has been over 70 years since his death. Are this pictures considered public domain? These pictures are now available in Italian Geographic society archive. Zenithmuhaba (talk) 07:10, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Zenithmuhaba: Hi, Yes, these should be fine. Yann (talk) 08:44, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Yann: Does URAA need to be considered here? If the photos were subject to 70 p.m.a., they would've still be under copyright protection on January 1, 1996, wouldn't they? FWIW, en:Leopoldo Traversi was Italian. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:58, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
- No. It is said above "taken in 1880s", so they are out of copyright since long. And Italy has a short copyright duration, so they wouldn't be affected by URAA even if taken at the end of his life in 1941. Yann (talk) 21:02, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. The pictures were taken in 1880s by Leopoldo Traversi in Ethiopia. Not much is talked about them since. I came across them and wanted to post them here since the copyright has expired. Zenithmuhaba (talk) 05:22, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

About statues in Chinese temples
[edit]For statues of Buddhas or deities inside or outside halls in Chinese temples, should the "Template:FoP-China" be added? Huangdan2060 (talk) 05:24, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Huangdan2060: Here's how it looks to me:
- If the statues are old enough to be out of copyright, then FoP is completely irrelevant.
- If they are copyrighted and you can attribute the author then, yes, {{FoP-China}} would be appropriate (but probably not mandatory; an FoP tag is basically an explanation of why something doesn't need licensing).
- If they are copyrighted and you cannot attribute the author, then it would appear FoP does not apply, and you are simply violating copyright with such a photo.
- If you want other opinions, you will generally get more informed opinions at COM:VP/C than at the general help desk. If you post there, please link this discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 20:10, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for your detailed explanation. I understand now. Based on your answer, I’ve come to realize that most of the thousands of Buddha statue photos I uploaded may actually be infringing, since the majority of the statues were created within the past 30 years. Very few date back to the Republican era (1912–1949) or earlier (before 1911), and those are mostly housed in museums. Huangdan2060 (talk) 03:44, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

Uploading images
[edit]Hi, there is a Church in Germany that holds many images of my community in diaspora, the images are available on their website, but they are not in the public domain. They own the images.
I wonder if I can contact them and ask them to use their images to upload here on Commons, and if that would be OK to do? Or would the images still not be allowed on Commons? Wlaak (talk) 11:04, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- It is not clear wheather the church owns the copyright but not photographers. Ruslik (talk) 19:49, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- If I contact and ask them, and it turns out they do own the copyright, hypothetically now because I have not asked them yet, would it then be OK to upload to commons, if I get their permission? Or would there still be some sort of issue or rule stopping me from uploading? Wlaak (talk) 19:51, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Wlaak: Please read Commons:Uploading works by a third party. If you still have questions after that, feel free to ask. - Jmabel ! talk 20:15, 25 January 2026 (UTC)

Uploaded video with wrong setting
[edit]If you can please change to "a person I know sent me the video", that would be appreciated. Alexandraaaacs1989 (talk) 20:00, 24 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Alexandraaaacs1989: That in no way gives it a CC-0 license. - Jmabel ! talk 21:27, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Welp, he have 7 days to get and send a permission Trade (talk) 21:31, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- 1. I explicitly asked the person if they would give CC0 permission to upload the video and they said yes.
- 2. I'll get them to send the email soon. If so, will that resolve these concerns? Alexandraaaacs1989 (talk) 22:05, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Alexandraaaacs1989: If the author of any media diligently forwards any licensing agreement to VRT, then that individual is following the proper way to resolve copyright concerns, yes. And while that obviously entails that the author's name or pseudonym is communicated to the permissions team, the volunteers staffing that communication service are bound to secrecy and privacy per the WMF's rules, preserving any anonymity towards the general public that may be wanted. Last, even if media get deleted, they can be restored without issues. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 22:16, 25 January 2026 (UTC)
- Grand-Duc, COM:VRT:
Emails are handled by community volunteers. VRTS tickets in the permissions-commons queue are visible to all volunteers who have access to that queue. The Wikimedia Foundation cannot guarantee confidential treatment of any sensitive information you include in your message, although all volunteers are required to treat it with confidentiality. Users should be careful of revealing personally-identifying information of subjects or creators, particularly names, physical addresses, and emails.
- Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:04, 26 January 2026 (UTC)- That's not a contradiction to what I wrote:
the volunteers staffing that communication service are bound to secrecy and privacy per the WMF's rules, preserving any anonymity towards the general public that may be wanted.
is the same asalthough all volunteers are required to treat it with confidentiality.
But as the WMF is neither providing nor managing the actual devices used to access the message queues, it doesn't have the actual (technical) power to guarantee the confidentiality of data. The latter would need a managed IT environment as found in larger corporations or government bodies, where professionals are dedicated in managing and mitigating dangers to security. [edit]i joined wikipedia yesterday after visiting the berlin group on thursday. unfortunately, i just spent 6 hours re-writing the "Phytochrome" article but couldn't see how to save a temporary version: i failed, and it seems that the new text has been lost in the process. any suggestions? i think that this is such an obvious potential problem for newbies that the non-obvious solution should be shown fairly prominently. File name too long to use move script?
[edit]I attempted to use the move procedure on the following File:2016-09-07_09_39_10_View_north_at_the_northeast_end_of_Covington_Road_and_the_south_end_of_Maryland_State_Route_382_(Croom_Road)_as_it_crosses_County_Line_Creek_from_Charles_County,_Maryland_into_Baden_and_Aquasco_in_Prince_Georges_County,_Maryland.jpg
I wanted to add an apostrophe in Georges as the name of the county is Prince George's County, Maryland (not sure how to link to the enwiki for it.) I have done this procedure at least 8 or nine times over the last day, but it would not do it. Not only can't I insert a ' into the file name as part of the move procedure, I have to delete 3 characters before I can insert any letter in the name. It appears that the move script can't handle the longest possible file name. What is the proper procedure here? Naraht (talk) 04:36, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- The proper procedure is to leave the name alone. It is perfectly clear, even if it leaves out an apostrophe. - Jmabel ! talk 06:21, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- Jmabel The county name is mispelled. There is an apostrophe and as such it is just as mispelled as the other proper noun examples in section 3. IMO, I feel it is just as misspelled as File:Ayres Rock 3.png.Naraht (talk) 15:14, 26 January 2026 (UTC)

- Commons:File renaming. - Jmabel ! talk 22:08, 27 January 2026 (UTC)- I stand corrected. I also feel that since mispellings count as one of the "Widely undisputed", this one should be done. I consider George's vs. Georges to be at the same level as Washington vs. Washignton, and you apparently don't. I don't think either of us is going to convince the other.
- Additionally, I'm surprised that no one else has chimed in. I'd appreciate a third opinion on *either* side.
- Even so the fact that the Move script/program can't handle something that long is a separate concern. Naraht (talk) 22:27, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

JPN yuki (talk) 08:12, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- I used Google Translate to understand the posting and I'll also use it to translate my answer back into Japanese.
- I think that there's a mismatch between the visible file extension and what is actually coded into the byte data. You may use the en:VLC media player and check the codec informations (Tools menu - Codec information on the English GUI) to see for sure what's happening. In any case, you will need to recode your file into e.g. OGA Vorbis or actual MP3, see also Commons:File types#Sound.
Grand-Duc (talk) 12:30, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- 「MP3 uploads have been disabled by default, due to concerns about copyright. If you have read and understand our licensing policy and our project scope, you may request permission at Commons:Requests for rights#Autopatrol.
- In case you aren't sure if your upload is constructive, it's best to ask for help at the help desk.」
- と言われました。「Commons:Requests for rights#Autopatrol」のページに進んだのですが、リクエストを記入する欄が見つかりません。このまま無視してアップロードしてもいいのでしょうか。度々になってすみません。 JPN yuki (talk) 09:20, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
Yasu (talk) 14:58, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- ありがとうございます。それでは、ファイルのアップロードはフォーマットの変換について勉強してからまた考えようと思います。 JPN yuki (talk) 07:02, 2 February 2026 (UTC)

Public domains in USA
[edit]Hi, if a photograph was taken in 1933 Turkey, and 70 years have passed since the image of that photograph, meaning it is now in public domain, but USA requires it to be taken before January 1, 1931 does that mean the image is not possible to have on Commons until two years? Wlaak (talk) 16:19, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Wlaak My understanding of Help:Public_domain#Published_outside_the_United_States is that yes, it does mean that. Also, PD in Turkey seems to be authors life + 70 years, unless the photo is anonymous. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:51, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

How to create GeoJSON .map files?
[edit]I have created a GeoJSON .map to be used in an article I recently created. However, I cannot figure out how I am supposed to create it here on Commons. The MediaWiki help page says simply to "create" the page with the Data:FILENAME.map syntax. But when I type that into the search field, it simply returns search results saying nothing was found with no option to create that page.
What am I missing? I was able to do this on my own five years ago ... that way, I think, but it's been so long I can't remember. Daniel Case (talk) 19:30, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Go to Data:YOUR TITLE HERE.map. Click Create. Either paste the contents or start typing. - Jmabel ! talk 22:15, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks! But it should be possible to do with a link from the search results page, as well. Daniel Case (talk) 03:19, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- For me, Special:Search does offer to create the page. Which search do you have selected in your preferences? Are you defaulting to a different search?
- You can also always just build the canonical URL: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data:YOUR_TITLE_HERE.map . - Jmabel ! talk 05:41, 29 January 2026 (UTC)

PD-Israel or PD-Palestine and Copyright
[edit]Hi, I have uploaded File:His Holiness Mor Ignatius Elias III at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, 1930.png, but I am not sure which PD template applies, is it Israel or Palestine? The photograph is from 1930 in Jerusalem.
I also wonder how I enter CC BY-NC-ND and CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 licenses, I could not find any templates.
Wlaak (talk) 20:26, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Neither CC-BY-NC-ND nor CC-BY-NC-SA are acceptable licenses on Commons, except insofar as they may be offered in addition to an accepted license that meets the terms laid out at COM:L. - Jmabel ! talk 22:18, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks Wlaak (talk) 23:20, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- I can only respond to your second concern: Commons does not allow NC or ND clauses. If you'd like, you can upload these to https://nccommons.org/, an unrelated but similar project. You can use the same login credentials that you have here to create an account there. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 22:19, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

So, i was minding my own buisiness, setting a file for deletion because it was from a copyrighted source, but then people defended it! even though the file had many operations done of it (like the artifact dots removed, stitched together and colour- adjusted) people thought that the copyright was bogus! even if the changes were even less, copyright is still copyright and it should be respected. (the thread is here Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Valhalla_crater_on_Callisto.jpg ) also, yann randomly tried to add an "invalid source" tag to one of my files (not the previous one) even though the source was RIGHT THERE!!! https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Valhalla_Callisto_VGR1.png&diff=prev&oldid=1154750838 also, he randomly changed the tag for this file File:Triton True Color.png from cc by 4.0 to nasa file!!! i made adjustments!!! Copyright help regarding File:Predrag Stojancev Coach 2026.jpg
[edit]--Nedeljko Simeunovic (talk) 08:45, 28 January 2026 (UTC) Hello, I have uploaded this image of Predrag Stojančev. I am in contact with the subject and he is the copyright holder. He will send a formal permission email to the VRT team (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org) shortly. Please add the Template:OPconfirm tag to the file to prevent deletion while the email is being processed. Thank you!
- @Nedeljko Simeunovic Assuming he does it correctly, it should sort itself out, even if the pic is temporarily removed. Question about FOP US
[edit]File:Booming Ben, the last heath hen.jpg is taken in the US and is an image of a statue/sculpture taken presumably not by its creator. The creator is Todd McGrain, who was born in 1961, so I don't think it was made before 1978. Due to this, it wouldn't be covered by freedom of panorama, would it? COM:FOP US says it's not OK. HurricaneZeta (talk) 20:47, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- No FoP for sculptures in the U.S., so if (as you seem pretty confident) it is a copyrighted sculpture, it should be nominated for deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 21:21, 28 January 2026 (UTC)

Uploading logos for athletics page
[edit]I work at a college athletics department and would like to update the logo files. Zbell34 (talk) 22:10, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Zbell34 Read COM:TOO. If they are too complex then the copyright owner must give permission, no exceptions. That is unlikely to be you. Pease read COM:VRT.
- There is no "Doctrine of Fair Use" on Wikimedia Commons. There is on the English Language Wikipedia. 🇵🇸🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦🇵🇸 22:40, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- Our athletics-specific marks are not yet copyrighted. I am the creator. Zbell34 (talk) 22:52, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Zbell34. Under en:US copyright law. content exhibiting enough creativity becomes (I believe) eligible for copyright protection as soon as its transfixed/published in some type of tangible medium. Current US copyright law no longer requires en:copyright formalities be completed in order for something to be considered eligible for copyright protection. Have these logo files been already released somewhere online like the college's or its athletic department's official website (including social media accounts)? In addition, although the creator of content tends to be considered its copyright holder, a person creating a logo themselves on behalf of their employer as part of their job (e.g., a en:work for hire arrangement or a en:copyright transfer agreement) might not be the sole or even a partial copyright holder. Since most universities and colleges maintain careful control over their branding and monetize it where they can as much as they can, you might want to check on this with whoever is in charge of your athletic department. Is your college or its athletic department claiming copyright authorship over the school's other athletic logos and branding? In principle, Commons will only be able to host these logo files if (1) they're too simple to be eligible for copyright protection under US copyright law and the copyright laws of the country of first publication (the latter only matter if you're college is located outside the US) or (2) the COM:CONSENT of the copyright holder or copyright holders (in the case of a shared ownership) can be verified in some way. It will be kind of easy to assess (1) if the logo can be seen somewhere online, but (2) is something that could require email verification of some kind. Finally, with respect to English Wikipedia (assuming that's where you want to use the logo files), you might want to take a close look at en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure because both of those would apply to your situation if you intend on editing there. Commons isn't really too concerned that you want to upload logo files of the athletic department you work for; it's mainly concerned with the copyright status of the photos. English Wikipedia, though, has it's own policies and guidelines with respect to employees trying to edit/create content about their employers, and you'll need to make sure you apply to comply with those policies and guideline to avoid problems on English Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:01, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
Image Upload Flagged for Abuse
[edit]Hello,
My recent attempted upload has been flagged for abuse, which I believe to be in error (though understandable), and I am also unable to file a report in response to this action.
I believe the image I created is a healthy expression of opposition to the fascism of the United States government and the violent acts perpetrated by ICE in its interests.
Please let me know if I can provide further info, and more is below.
Thank you.

Below is the response I attempted to submit:

Description of action and reason for flagging:
Attempting to upload a satirical anti-ICE image. LT 257, 257a, which are not publicly available. It also cited no confirmed email, but I have since confirmed and had a separate upload complete successfully.
Other info:
I suspect this may have something to do with the image containing depictions of swastikas that are clearly suggestive of the fascist nature of ICE. TrevorSalmon (talk) 20:56, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- I've nominated File:Porter & Pretti & Good. Ice Murders Name List.png for deletion.
- @TrevorSalmon: thanks for trying to contribute to the project, but please familiarize yourself with COM:SCOPE before uploading further files. - Jmabel ! talk 00:45, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
- The filter is unrelated to the issue(s) posited. While your edits were not the intended target, that they were disallowed appears fortuitous, as they were not appropriate for the Commons (or likely any WMF project). The Commons is a file repository for in-scope media, not a soapbox. No filter adjustment or user whitelisting needed at this time. Эlcobbola talk 14:59, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
- Ah, thank you for the info. I very much misunderstood the scope and should have given the page a closer read. Thank you all for your hard work! TrevorSalmon (talk) 19:21, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
Photo file sizes
[edit]What is the minimum and maximum size for a photo to be used in an article on wikipedia? Both file sizes and pixels would be helpful since the instructions I read on wiki were not. Thank you. Emanresu0 (talk) 23:34, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Emanresu0: Hi, There is no minimum or maximum. But please always upload the image in its original resolution. Then cropping can be done with [1]. The software MediaWiki takes care of resizing whenever it is needed. Please see Commons:First steps/Reuse#Embedding Commons media in Wikimedia projects for details. Is there anything I need to do to be sure the photos do not get published until I am ready to publish the article that I am working on in my Sandbox? I want to be sure I see what the entire article will appear like, with the photos, before I publish it. It sounds like uploading it to the Commons makes it immediately public. - I know that anything in a published Article on wiki is free to all. I was hoping that I could put the entire article together in my Sandbox, including its accompanying images, before moving it to publication on wiki. Apparently, not. Obtaining consent for deleted photos
[edit]I uploaded photos for an article and had the photographer give consent. She indicated she gave consent, but I just recently got notified the photographs were deleted with the following description: Removing photo name.jpg; it has been deleted from Commons by Krd because: No ticket permission since 27 December 2025. How does the photographer give consent to use the photos now? Kstrine320 (talk) 20:17, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Kstrine320, I have had a similar issue as you before. You can leave a comment at Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard and let them know about the ticket you had opened for the photos. Hope this helps! Surayeproject3 (talk) 21:39, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Kstrine320: when you say, "She indicated she gave consent," do you mean she already went through the COM:VRT process, or that she just orally said it was OK, or what? - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: She indicated she completed the wizard to provide consent. Evidently, something went wrong, though. Now, if I try to upload the photos again, I get an error message telling me the photos already exist, and that I shouldn't upload them again. It gives me the option to request the photo to be undeleted. Do I need to do that, and then, if they approve the request, have the photographer try to give consent again? Kstrine320 (talk) 01:55, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- Please do not upload the files again. They can be undeleted once this is sorted out.
- I am not a member of the VRT, but I'm an admin; I'm going to try to get as far through this as we can without involving VRT (because they are always backlogged). Then I'll give you solid next steps.
- I presume this is about:
- I see that none of those ever got as far as having a ticket number. You say the photographer "completed the wizard". Do you know whether she sent the email? If she sent it, did she ever get any acknowledgment, even an auto-generated acknowledgment, that it had been received? - Jmabel ! talk 02:34, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Thank you for your help with this. I do not know exactly what she did. I gave her instructions about providing consent, and then she texted that she completed it. Evidently, she missed a step, or didn't send the email. Now, she said she tried again with the wizard, but the photos don't come up. I'm assuming that's because they've been deleted, so I need to determine what to do to allow her to provide consent. Kstrine320 (talk) 17:32, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Kstrine320: If there was an automatic reply, there may be an unlabeled ticket number in that reply, maybe 16 or 17 digits long; can you or she find such? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:05, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Kstrine320: I don't know why this failed for her. I just tried using the Wizard with the filenames above and it works fine for me. Offhand, I can think of five ways this can be addressed, any of which would be fine:
- Try again, because it should work.
- If the email is in her "sent" folder, she can just send it again, to the address indicated in COM:VRT.
- Fill out the Wizard using
example.jpgin lieu of the proper file names, then edit in the names of the three files I mentioned here before sending. - Copy-paste from Commons:Volunteer_Response_Team#Email_message_template_for_release_of_rights_to_a_file, with appropriate choices and filling in the blanks.
- You can do one of the above yourself, send her the draft and have her send it from her email account.
- In any case, I would suggest to you that you ask her to cc you, so that this time you are in the loop and can see what is going on. - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 1 February 2026 (UTC)

Out of scope: unused images of religious/esoteric topics, mostly figures of people meditating.

- This is about Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Bondigoldwiki.
Bondigoldwiki,- File:Leben Yoghurt.jpg is an AI image generated from the prompt "Generate a 600 gram container of leben yoghurt".
- File:The ultimate goal of meditation.jpg "a person meditating with light starting to come out of their heart and fill their entire body"
- Leben is a form of probiotic yoghurt, which is different from Kefir, Acidophilus, Bulgaricum, Bifido etc.
- If people think that all yogurts are the same, then they are misinformed. Bondigoldwiki (talk) 05:55, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- Why use AI when you could take an actual photo of Leben Yoghurt? Personal artwork is not in scope per COM:SCOPE. Abzeronow (talk) 06:00, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, I did do that with the leben, and I edited the image but it was declined due to copyright. So I went to PLAN B. Bondigoldwiki (talk) 06:03, 31 January 2026 (UTC)

- File:The ultimate goal of meditation.jpg
- Hi, One of the main goals of meditation is "enlightenment" - but HOW do you portray that in an image?
- The second image "Be careful where you meditate.jpg" is because over the last 50++ years I have met people who go off to remote and dangerous places to meditate (including 1 guy who went into the jungle in India and never came out), so I want people to think about their own safety instead of think that God will save them (which sadly I have met many people who think like this). Bondigoldwiki (talk) 06:08, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- Bondigoldwiki,
File:Be careful where you meditate.jpg shows a woman in a forest, meditating on a big rock in the middle of a stream, realistic art style, with a tiger's head poking out from behind a tree. It's almost comedy, but not quite. The image is too busy to illustrate the danger. I'd say skip the AI and lean into it. Make it a cartoon, give the tiger a bib, knife and fork and make the tiger drool. And then actually use the image on a meditation guide.Hi, One of the main goals of meditation is "enlightenment" - but HOW do you portray that in an image?
I'm not sure you can, as it's a state of mind. So maybe that's forcing a square peg in a round hole. I didn't even realize that's what File:The ultimate goal of meditation.jpg was supposed to portray. I think I'd go with a photo of a Buddhist monk, meditating at dawn with closed eyes and a faint smile. I'm 1 Buddhist monk short to take such a picture.because over the last 50++ years
You've been meditating for over 50 years yet the potential deletion of some AI images on the internet clearly gets your goat. I'm from a different generation, in my language we say: "chill bro" - Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:34, 31 January 2026 (UTC)- Hi, My goat is upset because I got conflicting messages which were not as clear as I would like to see, for example.
- I click the link and I go to a page with dozens of other topics which are not related to me and I did not see the relevance of clicking in the first place.
- Plus I have been working online for almost 30 years and ambiguity is rampant and annoying to anyone who understands how precious time is.
- When I said I have been meditating, I did not say that I was enlightened, but I have met people who are including the Dalai Lama and Sai Baba et al.
- ON TOP of that you have wikipedia where many alternate "links" (subjects) are rubbished as pseudo-science and false information and even outright derogatory inclusions.
- So I am just being cautious.
- Hope this helps
- Regards Bondigoldwiki (talk) 16:17, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- Another point is that I get a request to TALK to someone and I go to the https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Signatures page and there is 600 pages of information instead of a simple LINK to the person who made the request.
- Regarding ambiguity, I got an email from you and clicked the link and then I saw this in BOLD BIG letters.
- Uploading photo of my father for his page on wikipedia
- and I have NO idea what that is about???

- Alexis, there is 1 other thing you should know.
- In 2023 I fell forward and hit my head, got knocked out and then smashed my head on the concrete (cement) floor.
- I was in hospital for 3 months and the doctors all said that I would be the village idiot for the rest of my life because of the brain damage I suffered.
- I have used herbal medicines and minerals to rebuild my "brain" to the point that I am now able to be at least 80% functional compared to before my accident.
- This event (somehow) also affected my personality - and my most beautiful wife persisted in helping me heal and support me during this time.
- I am not offering this as an excuse for my behavior, only that the me in 2026 (Jan) is different from the me in (JAN) 2023.
- But I am still working on improving.
- ++ It can get very frustrating knowing that you know something but you cannot remember what it is.
- Merci Bouquet
- That is thank you plus a bunch of flowers.
- Ciao Bondigoldwiki (talk) 16:55, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- Bondigoldwiki, thanks for the flowers.
For the Leben yoghurt, you should find a cup with a label that is mostly text. You can also find an angle and/or use bokeh to ensure any graphics on the label are not visible or out of focus. See for example File:Tomato soup in a can pull open top.jpg (soup can where the graphic on the label is out of focus) and File:Tomato soup in a can ingredient list.jpg (side of the soup can without graphics or creative text, just a list of ingredients). - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:26, 31 January 2026 (UTC)- Hi Alexis, I did as you requested, https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f3/Leben_Yoghurt_500g.jpg
- Is that OK?
- Thank you Bondigoldwiki (talk) 09:55, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- Bondigoldwiki, File:Leben Yoghurt 500g.jpg doesn't look like a photo.
I meant find an actual cup of yoghurt in a store with a mostly-text label and take a real photo using a real camera or smartphone camera, taking care to keep any graphics on the label out of the shot or out of focus. Please stop using AI.

- @Bondigoldwiki: your sentence "So I went to PLAN B." is telltale. Please take note of Commons:CARES, you can't use generative AI software to circumvent limitations resulting from copyrights. That would cause problems with either the intellectual property of the original designers of any model of the depiction or conflict with the Commons:Project scope, which basically says that random phantasies (be they produced by software or humans) are not within the purview of Commons' project aims.
- There are motifs and subjects that simply are nigh impossible to capture in an image and hence to illustrate. Enlightenment and philosophical topics are certainly chief candidates for such "un-illustratable" topics. We simply have to put up with such limitations in our redactional Wikimedia work.
- On to something else. If I understood the implications of some postings above, English may not be your, Bondigoldwiki's, mother tongue. It is the official policy that Commons is multilingual, so please(!) feel confident in using whatever language suits you best, that must not be the unofficial lingua franca English. At least for the languages with large communities of maternal speakers (e.g. the European ones, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, standard Arabic and likely also Hebrew), there are active contributors around who can serve as interpreters. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 17:43, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- May I ask WHY am I dealing with 4 or 5 people and repeating myself?
- PLAN B was because I tried to use an EDITED image and your system declined my post, so in order to INFORM the public of another probiotic called LEBEN, I had an image generated WHICH BTW was NOT to circumvent anything.
- The AI generated image was a stand-alone image and NOT based on any image that I uploaded so I do NOT see the issue with copyright that you are suggesting???
- IF this image was illegal, then WHY is there an AI category in the submission form?
- REQUEST
- Can I just work with 1 person instead of the entire company?
- Thank you Bondigoldwiki (talk) 06:41, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- The Wikimedia world is not a company with individual customer service desk representatives taking charge of or getting assigned to any individual. Every Wikimedian as you, I or the other participants on this page are has the same rights and duties while responding to inquiries. So, you cannot expect that responders stay the same, any Wikimedian who feels inclined to write something is free to do so.
- I strongly suggest that you familiarise yourself with the Commons:Policies and guidelines, especially COM:SCOPE, COM:Licensing, COM:Derivative works and "what Commons is not".
- This media repository here, Commons, suffers a lot from copyright violations (short: copyvio) that are uploaded by users who don't observe for whatever reason the copyright emphasis placed upon contributions. Thus, there are several procedures in place to deal with unwanted stuff, unwanted as copyvios or because the media don't fit within the project's aims (per COM:SCOPE). These procedures can be (semi-)automatic or human controlled redactional steps, it looks like at least some of your uploads were put into a human-controlled working queue, the deletion process (info: COM:DR).
- Going on, about AI. The current generative software (example: en:Stable diffusion, or DALL-E, ChatGPT, etc.) is software that is based upon a HUGE heap of data, especially texts and also imagery. You can basically assume that e.g OpenAI's servers (the ChatGPT maker) have gulped down basically the whole internet, as long as it was text. Our of that data heap, the algorithms distilled statistical relationships between words and sentences, so that the software knows in a probabilistic way what words stand close together, enabling it to emulate human speech. The same holds true for imagery, there, the statistical models describe what colour values are expected for neighbouring pixels. Further reading: en:Large Language Model (LLM for short).
- Any such LLM can be prompted to make an output, a copy of actual copyrighted works, there are papers out which demonstrate that the tested LLM will reliably reproduce novels like Harry Potter. This is due to a technique used besides statistics and probabilities, replicating human memorization - and the prominent LLM all have been trained with copyrighted material. Meta for instance was caught torrenting the complete assets of en:Anna's Archive, and IIRC Anthropic saved copies of pirated e-books for training their model "Claude". Roundabout a dozen cases went to court, judgements will come on in due time. This is the explanation why AI generated imagery is problematic on Commons on copyright grounds.
- On the other hand, yes, there's an option to declare AI-made media in the upload form. Several jurisdictions mandate human creators, so software or animals can't claim copyrights. So, as long as no copyrighted model of and for an image to be uploaded here can be recognised, copyrights aren't a reason to refuse putting AI generated media into Commons - but these media must still comply with other rules, especially SCOPE!
- The actual case of some yoghurt imagery would have been problematic on several grounds:
- - Copyrights, the AI is likely to have learned the design from the actual product, so it's possible that its output is infringing upon intellectual property rights or people working for the yoghurt maker.
- - Project scope, if the AI made a boilerplate yoghurt image. Such imagery has no educational value, as it's somewhat distant from reality (an AI phantasy), personal artwork or easily replaceable with actual photography.
- - Being an abuse of Commons, per COM:NOT. Your answers hint at the existence of some pecuniary motivation like advertising some item, one can assume that a conflict of interests is present.
- I hope that these explanations with a bit more details are helpful to you. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 07:40, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- I have had 4 people contact me about the same image. Bondigoldwiki (talk) 09:33, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- Pls read my previous comment response regarding why I added this version of LEBEN.
- There is NO other version like this, I gave the AI specific instructions and it produced a NON copyright container of leben,
- How can there be copyright is there is NO copyright and summising that there MAY BE is a hypothetical - like the world is flat or the moon might be made of cheese.
- There is NO copyright infringement, I looked at dozens of images before I asked google to make me a unique version of leben @ 600 grams. As per my declared statement when I posted this image. If it bothers you so much then just delete the bloody thing, this is tedious arguing about what might have been if it could have been when it may have been but it wasn't.

[edit]I want to upload photo of my father and his related detail pics but not alloed to upload, no copyrights we have for those, jhow could i add Thegpoorg (talk) 14:29, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Thegpoorg: Hi, and welcome. - @Thegpoorg: "no copyrights we have for those" is not very clear; if there is some language you write better than English, do feel free to use it (or to try putting your remarks in more than one language).
- If what you mean by "no copyrights we have for those" is that the photographs are copyrighted and you do not own the copyrights, then we would need a license from the person who does own the copyright. No one else can grant a license.
- If what you mean by "no copyrights we have for those" is that the photographs are not copyrighted, you would need to be able to explain why they are not copyrighted; that is an unusual situation, since in most countries on earth, photographs are automatically copyrighted when they are created, and that copyright typically lasts until 70 years after the death of the photographer. There are exceptions, but in most countries, almost all photographs from the last 70 years, and even many photographs that are well over 100 years old, are still copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 00:42, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
Copyright help regarding File:Obituary.png
[edit]I am trying to upload a file which is cut out from a PDF stored at the Bibliothèque National de France of a newspaper called Le Figaro. The date is April 15th 1888 and the article I cut out, an obituary of Alfred Nobel, is anonymous. As a tag, I gave the one corresponding to anonymous works older than 70 years, and as Source I gave Source gallica.bnf.fr / Bibliothèque nationale de France but I am still told that I have not provided appropriate information. Downloading images
[edit]Hi,
I'm currently writing a dissertation and I want to test a hypothesis using images on Wikimedia Commons. I'd like to download 1000 random photographs under Category:Love. I can compile a python script to do so, is this something I could do with a bot account or is it something that would not be allowed? Hiding (talk) 18:23, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hiding, you don't need a bot account for read-only operations. However, please limit how often your bot makes a request as to not cause a spike in server load. Pausing for 5 seconds after each request is plenty. If you don't need full-size images, consider downloading thumbnails instead. Links that may interest you: PagePile and PetScan. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:38, 31 January 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help, thumbnails work perfectly for me and I'll limit to 6 seconds to be safe. Have a great day! Hiding (talk) 10:44, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
Artist signature noted as illegible; it appears reasonably clear to me, on magnifying the image that it is engraved as Champin i.e. Jean-Jacques Champin (1796-1860) French painter, watercolorist, and lithographer known for his historical landscapes and portraits. ~2026-67773-9 (talk) 18:38, 31 January 2026 (UTC)

Doppelte Kategorie
[edit]Hallo!
- Overwriting is a complicated matter; often we want both images, e.g.
- there might be different decisions about colors
- the generally less good version of something may be an accurate record of what is held by some particular archive.
- There really are good reasons we no longer let most users overwrite content they didn't upload. We aren't exactly sure of the error rate we got, but it was certainly over 20% and might have approached 50%. You are bit short of the point where it would be appropriate to ask for the Commons:Patrol#Autopatrol right that would let you do this; the usual bar is 500 non-trivial edits.
- As for the categories: they are not particularly well named, but Category:Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'ille de Java is an 1880 edition of the work, whereas Category:Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java is an 1863 edition. I'll start a CfD to get this better sorted out, it looks like there may be at least one error in a choice of parent category as well. - Jmabel ! talk 01:22, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for helping me with this issue. I was not aware of the fact that keeping multiple versions of the same artwork is desired.
- However, the images in Category:Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'ille de Java originate in the Biodiversity Heritage Library and they also provide jp2 files of the same scan with a significantly higher resolution. Do you think that these files would be of value for Wikimedia Commons? Do you think that jp2 files should generally be converted to png to prevent quality loss in comparison to jpg or is this just an unnecessary duplicate?
- Maybe you can have a look at my previous edits since I am afraid to have caused trouble in Category:Flowering Plants and Ferns of New South Wales and on files like File:Muehlenbeckia adpressa - Curtis.jpg or File:Coccoloba pubescens PDold.jpg (just examples) by overwriting the majority of files with scans from apparently different archives. I want to point out that uploading and cropping all of these files was a lot of work so I would like you to not immediately revert my edits.
- I am deeply sorry for causing so much trouble. Cuello de pepino (talk) 08:28, 1 February 2026 (UTC)

- I would have to say: the person who made that video is either seriously ignorant of how Commons works, or pretending to be ignorant of how Commons works. Certainly 999real is not a flack for the Iranian regime. He is uploading available free-licensed material. If the government of Iran is making such material available, and no one else involved is doing so, that is not under our control.
- Further: yes, Tasmin is banned by the English-language Wikipedia as a source for encyclopedia articles. That has literally nothing to do with whether they are allowed a source for photographs on Commons. About the only reason Commons bans a source is that they launder copyrights to the extent that we cannot trust the validity of any license they would issue. Even an organization where the bulk of what they put out is repugnant tracts that fall outside of our scope can still be a valid source for (for example) photos of their own leadership, or a meeting that they hosted. - Jmabel ! talk 21:50, 1 February 2026 (UTC)

A devious photo from Tasnim.
Bahmanja, ah, okay. To summarize the clip, guy talks about searching Commons for Iran protests 2026 sorted by recency and finding only pictures from news agencies controlled by the Iranian government. He ends by saying "stunningly, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons not only have done nothing about this, they don't even know it's going on"
Actually we do know. There's a simple reason for this: they release all their media with a free license. These are photos taken by professional photographers which we are generally happy to have when they are freely licensed and meet COM:SCOPE. So they get uploaded here. As of right now, his statement is no longer true as the most recent uploads right now come from Category:Photos from Vahid Online, Category:Photos from Mamlekate and a few others. But government sources could be the most recent again tomorrow.
Even I uploaded a few photos from Tasnim a few years ago. Doesn't mean anything. If those with Starlink access license their content freely, we'll be more than happy to host it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:11, 1 February 2026 (UTC)- Thanks Alexis for clarification. I understand the logic behind this site now. But I still do not understand why a non Iranian, 999real who does not know any Iranian put up so many posts related to Iran. Maybe he has extra time on his hand and likes to post random pictures just for fun. Bahmanja (talk) 02:51, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
- 1st of all I am not Iranian and I don't speak Farsi and I never been in contact with anyone from Iran outside of Commons and I uploaded all those files with their original description because they show the claims that was made and tactics used by the government during these times which is important especially because of possibility of further internet censorship in Iran and I never claimed these images or descriptions are correct or tried to insert them in Wikipedia articles but apparently no one is able to think of these reasons REAL 💬 ⬆ 23:37, 1 February 2026 (UTC)

Uncopyrighted files
[edit]Can I upload files that are not copyrighted? JUNGAL9992 (talk) 07:47, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- You probably should explain what you mean by "not copyrighted". COM:THIRD might be good reading here. Abzeronow (talk) 08:00, 1 February 2026 (UTC)
- If they are truly not copyrighted, and are COM:SCOPE in scope, yes, but most people do not understand what is and is not copyrighted. Do see COM:THIRD. - Jmabel ! talk 21:55, 1 February 2026 (UTC)

About creating a complicated graph using the new Chart extension
[edit]As the extension uses Commons to keep data, I want to ask this question here. I started transforming some graphs which are using the deprecated Graph extension in my home wiki to the new Chart extension. I want to learn that is it technically possible to create a graph of w:tr:Şablon:Görev tarihçesi/Hizmetliler using the Chart extension.
It uses the EasyTimeline extension, not the Graph extension. Also, please consider when replying that some lines like "Vikiçizer" has blank intervals. Karacehennem (talk) 14:41, 1 February 2026 (UTC)

Uploading photos
[edit]can the photos contain nudity ? Briank1600 (talk) 01:01, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
- Briank1600, Wikimedia Commons is not censored, so technically yes. We do have Category:Naturism for example. However, photos must be educationally usable. At least a part of the community is extra strict when it comes to nudity. Blurry dick pics absolutely won't fly. Also consider personality rights which are extra important when nudity is involved.
What are you looking to upload? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:48, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
