Robert Reiner (March 6, 1947 – December 14, 2025) was an American actor, director, producer, and activist. He acted in the All in the Family television series. He directed movies, such as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and The Bucket List.[1] Reiner was a liberal activist.[2] He was a co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, a non-profit organization that started the court challenge against California Proposition 8 that banned same-sex marriage in California.[3]
Personal life
[change | change source]Reiner was born to a Jewish family. He is the elder son of Carl Reiner (1922-2020) and Estelle Reiner (née Lebost, 1914-2008).[1] He was born in the Bronx, New York City. He lived in New Rochelle, New York during his childhood. When he was 13, he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he attended high school and university.
Reiner was a Democrat and attended the 2012 Democratic National Convention in support of President Barack Obama's re-election.[4]
Reiner said his childhood home was not very religiously Jewish, although he did have a bar mitzvah ceremony.[5] His father, Carl, had become an atheist in response to Hitler and the Holocaust.[6] Reiner identified as an atheist on the January 13, 2012, episode of Real Time with Bill Maher.[7][8] He later said that, while he rejected organized religion, he was sympathetic to the ideas of Buddhism.[7] In a September 2025 interview with Piers Morgan, Reiner said "I'm Jewish, but I believe in the teachings of Jesus and I believe in 'do unto others' and I believe in forgiveness".[9][10]
Death
[change | change source]
In the early hours of December 14, 2025, Reiner and his wife were stabbed to death at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California.[11] Their bodies were reportedly found by their daughter Romy.[12] Reiner was 78 years old.[13] Their deaths are being investigated as a homicide.[11] The next day, Reiner’s son Nick, was arrested and charged for the murder of both.[14][15] The day before the murders on December 13, Rob and Nick Reiner had an argument at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O'Brien.[16] On December 17, a coroner said that Reiner and his wife died from apparent sharp force injuries.[11]
