Question from Nigel Stanworth (14:03, 24 November 2025)
[edit]Hello, I am looking to update the page for Chris Thompson (English Musician), I am a very occasional user of Wikipedia and I think the info to be changed may not be classed as a minor change.
The info to be updated is as follows: a) Date of Birth (correct year is 1947) b) Place of Birth (should be Hertford, Hertfordshire)
I've attempted to do this but it has been reverted by MaterialScientist
In terms of citation, the request has come direct from the musician himself who I interviewed last Friday. You can see my attribution as follows in terms of relationship, I am currently working on a 50th anniversary re-issue of one of the albums.
Record Company: https://www.eastcentralone.com/about-us/
Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/artist/1623548-Nigel-Stanworth?srsltid=AfmBOoq1mI-2nOw8a4NG0kYdpYwFMWh7EoZeukdkibl325G__0tEzKdY I am listed for liner notes against many of the releases
Any thoughts on how to get this information updated? Thanks --Nigel Stanworth (talk) 14:03, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Nigel Stanworth: Hello, the main issue as I read it here is that you didn’t provide any source when you made these changes to the article, which is about a living person, something that is treated very carefully here; see WP:BLP for more information. I suggest that you start a thread on the article’s talk page where you explain this and add a citation next time you edit the article. Also, there is something called the 3RR rule here, which states that one should never make more than three repeated edits within 24 hours to an article if you get reverted, as this could lead to being blocked. Shellwood (talk) 15:34, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Shellwood,
- Thanks for the advice, I assume my attribution will count as the citation given the only correct source is the artist himself? I did mention it was from the artist but probably no reason why I should be viewed a valid source.
- Nigel Nigel Stanworth (talk) 16:34, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Nigel Stanworth: You will need a reliable source verifying the birth date and place per the BLP (Biographies of living persons) policy. However, I can see that the current source used does not mention him being born in Ashford, Kent, nor does it state his birth year, so this should be removed and left simply as being born in the United Kingdom(or England per crossfirepublications) and raised in New Zealand. The article should also be placed in the “Year of birth missing (living people)” category. Removing Ashford, Kent, and adding the [[Category:Year of birth missing (living people)]] at the bottom can be done at any time by anyone. Moving forward from this, you should try to find some source that verifies his birth date and birthplace. Until then, the unverified material can be removed. Use the talk page to explain your changes first, so you don’t find yourself accused of edit-warring or violating the 3RR rule, good luck! Shellwood (talk) 18:06, 24 November 2025 (UTC)

Finally, there is a problem with your username, as it goes against our policies here; see WP:NAMEGUIDE. Question from Willowlandsfamily (15:53, 28 December 2025)
[edit]How can I suggest having the service men on the War Memorial in Rowlands Gill remembered with their family histories where possible? On the Rowlands Gill page. My family member is Matthew Cowing, he was my Dad’s uncle, my Dad was born in 19 Cowen Terrace, Co-uncidentally in the same year Lawrence of Arabia died 1935. Matthew died in Arras France in April 1917. He also served on Gallipoli and was sent to France to recover from Fever. It was just a thought, as it looks like most on the memorial are only names now. I can only as Matthew fully. We have done a family history with history of Rowlands Gill and my family. --Willowlandsfamily (talk) 15:54, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Willowlandsfamily: Hi, I’m not familiar with that area but we don’t recommend that people edit topics where they have a conflict of interest. This includes relatives; see WP:COIE. It’s better that you make edit requests in this case. Anyhow, all the material you add must be supported by reliable sources and not every person or event meets our notability criteria. Also, I suggest that you ask to have your account renamed to avoid any confusion, since we don’t allow accounts to be shared and they must represent you as an individual person, not a group. You can read more about it here, and a username change can be requested at WP:CHUS, good luck! Shellwood (talk) 16:26, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
- Hi Thank you very much for your reply. I understand, naturally it is not my place to add names if they are not my family. It was just a thought as this memorial is very important to Rowlands Gill History. ~2026-17043 (talk) 19:59, 1 January 2026 (UTC)

I'm trying to create a page and my first attempt was declined, with a note to say it needed more reference citations. I have now done that, but I'm unable to resubmit the article for consideration as I get a message saying the panel in which the button is housed is a template.
Can you advise me on how to resubmit my article please?
Thank you,
Tricia --Patricia Jane Anderson (talk) 13:02, 12 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Patricia Jane Anderson: Hello Tricia, I haven’t gone through all the references used, but user-generated sources like IMDb should never be used in biographies about living people. IMDb should only be listed in the External links section and should not be used as a source. As for the news outlets you have used, this list contains a number of sources that may or may not be used (The Daily Telegraph is ok). As you are writing about a writer, this link contains useful information on whether or not the subject passes our notability criteria: WP:AUTHOR. I’m not familiar with this writer, and I think you should ask the reviewer who declined your draft for further advice on what can be done with this submission, good luck! Hi Shellwood,
I'm specialist in biotech and would like to write a few industry articles (about biologic drugs, companies in this market, and technologies used in pharma), but I'm not sure where to start. Can you recommend any resources for writing a proper wiki article? I've already read the main tutorial, the quiz on linking to reliable sources, and the Help:Your first article page. Today I went through The Wikipedia Adventure, but I'm still not entirely sure I know everything I need to (e.g., templates and formulas are still a mystery to me). Will you support me in writing my first article, please (as a reviewer)?
Have a good day, Lodzian --Lodzian (talk) 08:41, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Lodzian: Hi, this is not my field of expertise, and I can’t give you any recommendations for sources other than searching for relevant academic journals. Use Google Scholar, JSTOR, or any other digital library that is relevant to your topic. When it comes to writing about companies, it’s important to understand that not all companies are considered notable enough to warrant their own articles. Templates and formulas are outside of my comfort zone as well, so I suggest that you ask at the Teahouse if there is anything you need help with. And if you write an article or a draft and it gets declined or nominated for deletion, I can try to figure out what went wrong. Good luck! Shellwood (talk) 11:29, 21 January 2026 (UTC)
- Is John, King of England, NOT authoritarian, but a good man? ~2026-39248-6 (talk) 05:47, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
- @2026-39248-6: I don’t care what he was, if you want to describe him in those terms, find a source and include it in the article. And don’t go around adding the categories totalitarianism and authoritarianism everywhere unless you have support for that in reliable references in the main articles. We don’t do original research here. Shellwood (talk) 11:12, 22 January 2026 (UTC)

- This makes him an authoritarian. Reply? ~2026-39248-6 (talk) 11:12, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- @2026-39248-6: I’m afraid you don’t seem to understand how this site works, as you keep doing your own analysis. Nowhere in the link is he labelled as authoritarian. While he is described as cruel, sadistic, ruthless, etc, the author does not use the term authoritarian. We can sit here and analyse all kinds of medieval rulers and argue that they were totalitarian or authoritarian, but you must not base the material you add here on your own conclusions. Again, no original research. And while link is a reliable source, I don’t think it would improve the article in this case. Shellwood (talk) 11:36, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- Also, are medieval/ancient nations superfree like democracies, but not totalitarian or authoritarian or dictatorship AT ALL!? Yes or no? ~2026-39248-6 (talk) 08:44, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Reply? Are they super duper different? ~2026-39248-6 (talk) 08:44, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- Is Neo-Assyrian Empire not authoritarian or totalitarian but something super duper different that's completely not like them!? Yes or no? Reply? ~2026-39248-6 (talk) 08:44, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- @2026-39248-6: What you and I believe is irrelevant for the reasons I already outlined above. Just to clarify, you will struggle to find support for calling king John or the ancient Assyrians totalitarian and/or authoritarian, as these terms refer to modern extreme political systems (20th–21st centuries) when discussed by academics and social scientists. Shellwood (talk) 11:04, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- That means Assyria hates authoritarianism? Yes or no? Reply? ~2026-39248-6 (talk) 14:10, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- @2026-39248-6: This means that you will have to find something else to do and stop posting here. Shellwood (talk) 14:24, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

- @Hanzalabadshah: English please. Shellwood (talk) 09:50, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- Peace be upon you, may God's mercy and blessings be upon you
- I have a manuscript of my grandfather's book, which is (85) years old. I would like to publish it along with the printed version. Please tell me the procedure. ~2026-55622-6 (talk) 10:04, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Hanzalabadshah: Hi, if you wish to make an article about the book, I suggest you use your sandbox and create a draft there, but we discourage people from writing about topics where they have a conflict of interest. However, we don’t publish any original works. We are not a publishing company, so you will need to look elsewhere for help with that. Shellwood (talk) 10:15, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- I am not publishing the book for commercial purposes but for the benefit of the public.
- Secondly, this manuscript will remain preserved, so the only way to access it is to upload it to Wikipedia.
- Please guide me, thank you. ~2026-55622-6 (talk) 11:54, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- What is sandbox?public. ~2026-55622-6 (talk) 11:57, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
- @2026-55622-6: We don’t publish any books, regardless of whether it's for commercial purposes or not. This is an encyclopedia. Your sandbox is here: User:Hanzalabadshah/sandbox, and the purpose of the sandbox is to create articles, not to publish manuscripts. You can head over to Wikisource and try your luck there, but I’m not active within that project, so you will need to ask someone else over there to sort out any problems. - @Hanzalabadshah: I have moved what you posted here to your sandbox so you can work from there since this is a message board. And please try to translate it into English, since this is the English Wikipedia. I also left a welcoming message on your talk page that contains useful links about how this site works.
