美国首席大法官一职已由十七位不同的人担任，首位是约翰·杰伊，最新一位是目前在任的约翰·罗伯茨。首席大法官由美国总统提名，经参议院批准后任命，人选可以是最高法院的现任联席大法官，也可以是其他外部法官。[1]

首席大法官是美国司法体系中最具影响力的人物，也是最高法院的首席法官[1]。宪法仅在一处提及该职位，称“当美国总统受审时，由首席大法官主持庭审”[2]。1789年司法条例正式确立了该职位及助理法官的设置，其权力来源于制定法与惯例。他被视为“同侪之首”，投票权与其他法官权重相同，核心职责是主持最高法院庭审并管理其日常运作[1]。

此外，首席法官在其持多数意见的案件中指定法官撰写法院意见，担任司法会议及联邦司法中心委员会主席，监督法院行政办公室，任命两名成员加入行政、立法及司法部门薪资委员会，向国会报告法院作出的裁决，同时履行主持总统就职宣誓的礼仪职责。[1]

约翰·马歇尔是任职时间最长的首席法官，从1801年至1835年共任职34年。约翰·拉特利奇是任职时间最短的，1795年任职仅181天，他的任命是时任总统乔治·华盛顿在国会休会期间作出的休会任命，后来遭到参议院否决。华盛顿也是提名该职位法官人数最多的总统，共提名四人，但其中一人在获得参议院批准后拒绝了这一职位。尤利西斯·S·格兰特提名了三位首席法官，约翰·亚当斯提名了两位，但每位总统的提名中均仅有一人获得确认。林登·B·约翰逊也曾作出一次提名，但该提名后来被撤回[1]。威廉·霍华德·塔夫脱是历史上唯一既担任过总统又担任过首席法官的人[3]，他还曾提名爱德华·道格拉斯·怀特担任该职位[4]。
