Main Page idea
[change source]I was wondering if there was a way that we could add something relating to Wikipedia:Good Articles on the main page? Something that could create viewer engagement right off the bat. Seeing as how there's a little over 100 GAs, I figured it'd be nice to shed some spotlight to those articles especially since naturally they may be harder to find/appreciated. I know it's not common at English Wikipedia to spotlight Good Articles, but seeing as how we're a small community and how we have 102 GAs, I feel like that wouldn't be a bad touch. I was thinking perhaps adding some language to the VGA section of the main page. Something like: "Other very good articles – Proposals – Requirements – Some good articles". Thoughts? TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 07:14, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
- I think that's a good idea. We could also think about creating (shorter, without image?) teasers for GAs. And then list one GA teaser as well? Eptalon (talk) 07:59, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
- I would support more visibility of the GA process. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 11:50, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
- Completely agree. For a community as small as ours, 100 GAs is fairly good, so why not showing them on our Main Page? That'd probably even courage people to work on them and get them to VGA status. -Barras talk 17:57, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
- Should we add a small section of GA article previews like the VGA articles on the main page or a simple mention of Good Articles like how I suggested above? TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 19:27, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
- If we agreed,I would say a GA blurb should be noticeably shorter than a VGA blurb, and we need to write 100 blurbs first Eptalon (talk) 20:29, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
- Good idea. I’ve noticed some of the VGA blurbs are rather small compared to the leads they have on their articles. We could expand the VGA blurbs a bit and follow what Eptalon is suggesting: Two sentence blurbs for GAs? TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 00:04, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- I agree also. fr33kman 01:09, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- Perhaps what we could do is expand the "About Wikipedia" section to make it more elongated like the DYK section and then beneath the "About Wikipedia" section we could have a "Selected Very Good Article" (left) and "Selected Good Article" (right) previews? TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 23:05, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- I've also created a sanbox that depicts how the GA blurbs would ideally look like for the newest 10 GAs :) I was also thinking for VGA blurbs and possible GA blurbs that are about shows, characters, books, movies, etc. that don't have a picture, we could place an image of a person related to them such as how I did for the Big Break blurb. English wikipedia does this for featured articles that have copyrighted images that can't appear on the main page. TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 23:31, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- I assume you mean to make the "About Wikipedia" section cover the full width of the page and not go down so far. That's a good idea. ~2025-61813-2 (talk) 13:36, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
- Yep! The About Wikipedia be expanded horizontally much like how DYK is and then beneath that section we could have VGA (left) and GA blubs (right). TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 19:57, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
- I like what you did with the sandbox. How many blurbs do you propose? fr33kman 20:18, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
- I was prepared to draft blurbs for all 102 good articles. Would that be a bad idea? TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 02:39, 17 September 2025 (UTC)
- We can probably just write a new one every time a new article is promoted to GA. I would suggest having a dedicated page somewhere to be able to see all blurbs at once which could be admin protected, then in the talk page, people can suggest revisions, (grammar, spelling, linking, etc). MOS:OL
[change source]It is my view at this time that, mostly, en:MOS:OL shouldn't apply on this wiki. For readers using simple, links for things like London or England could be useful. For example (to use a language I speak), in Spanish "London" is "Londres" and "England" is "Inglaterra". Does the community agree with me, because I don't recall any consensus on the subject. --IWI (talk) 02:48, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- With that being said, I also think for some examples, OL would apply. There is no need to link "kilometre" for example. --IWI (talk) 02:49, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- Kilometre likely is a bad example, as it is a common unit of measurement (even though the SI unit is the metre/meter). While SI units generally have a base 10, this is not true for imperial units (1 gallon = 4 quarts =8 pints, which happens to be around 4.5 litres). So depending on the context, linking a unit of measurement might make sense. Eptalon (talk) 02:59, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- I would agree so long as it's not taking the mick by linking every single little random thing - although I'd hope that is obvious! --Ferien (talk | join TBA!) 20:34, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
- I remember another discussion about this, where I made the same point you do, that people whose first language is not English might not recognize the English words for things. The example I used at the time was Florence/Firenze. So, yes, I think we should link important terms. Keeping in mind that we (at least theoretically) have a multi-lingual user community, we need to link more than they would on enwiki, but not necessarily every single word. -- Auntof6 (talk) 23:57, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the input. I will take everyone's advice on board for my edits. Thanks, --IWI (talk) 10:45, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
Help close out Phase IV of Total Backlog Annihilation
[change source]Phase IV of the Total Backlog Annihilation has focused on clearing out Category:Pages with broken reference names. The project is housed at User:Ferien/WikiProject TBA/Phase IV. It started at 847 in July and is now down to 20 articles! The last few could use some brain power as many of them aren't simply just finding it in the article history or the current (or even past) version of the English Wikipedia article. I've laid out some of the concerns for some of the remaining ones at the project page. Thanks for any help you can provide! CountryANDWestern (talk) 01:51, 25 September 2025 (UTC)

- I'm going to work now on Category:Articles with broken file links which was Phase II of the project. It's back up over 100 entries after getting down to 5 in May 2024. If anyone who is Wikidata inclined is looking for a task, the Special:UnconnectedPages] category, which was the original backlog annihilated, is up to 183 entries. Some of these are ones that can be handled here on Simple, but others may require some Wikidata work. CountryANDWestern (talk) 14:30, 25 September 2025 (UTC)

Does simple english wikipedia have categories for discussion?
[change source]I want to propose Category:Movies based on short movies for discussion to be moved to Category:Long movies based on short movies. Is there some kind of procedure for renaming categories like this aside from manually moving the category and changing it on every page? Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 19:17, 28 September 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not sure we need to shorten the scope of this category. Is this to distinguish between another category about short films based on other short films? Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 21:36, 28 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Immanuelle: You just described the procedure. Category moves don't move the content. You have to move the category, then move the contents. Cat-a-lot can make the content moves much easier. We might also have a bot that would eventually move the content. -- Auntof6 (talk) 23:03, 28 September 2025 (UTC)

The luck of the draw (or are more of the articles 'seriously challenged')
[change source]One (new) user,

- Not trying to be rude: I have put tags back into the article.
Alexandra Bridge, Western Australia.--Same (unspecified) problems, new IP, and quite likely the same user as above.--No 'crime' committed, except article not ready to stay published.--When this IP moves on, then i plan to tag his/her one, last article: "Tone", and "POV".--"Tourist-brochure wording", is the 'dead giveaway'.--No one has yet written on their talk-page: Within a day or two, then i might write: "Hi! Your articles do not seem ready to stay published.--Are you using A.I. to create articles? Bye for now, while i ask the community to put limits on (arguably) your daily publishing of too many articles, that do not seem ready to stay published.". ~2025-27264-18 (talk) 14:14, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Discord and arbitration
[change source]Hey all. I know Discord is pretty popular here with SEWP contributors, so I want to give you a heads up. If you actually read the new Terms of Service that they started requiring today, there's an opt out clause. You send them an email at arbitration-opt-out@discord.com and tell them "I opt out of the binding arbitration clause." There is a time limit on this. Thirty days from today.
That means that if there is a problem between you and Discord later, they can't say "Ha ha ha, you HAVE to go to binding arbitration and you are NOT allowed to do a regular lawsuit in public court because you agreed to it."
Nobody needs that drama. Darkfrog24 (talk) 17:27, 29 September 2025 (UTC)

- The current backlog we are focusing on is Category:Dead-end pages but the categories are often suggested to me by other editors, so you are welcome to suggest other categories for the next phase. You're also more than welcome to work on other backlogs at the same time, so thank you for your work on the interlanguage link category.
- There isn't a bot to remove the dead-end template from the ones with links as far as I know, and in the time it would take to develop and approve one, we can just remove them from the pages as we go.
- I've encouraged other editors to link to User:Ferien/TBA/P5 in their edit summaries to try and encourage more people to work on the project, but there's no tool being used for it.
- Let me know if you have any other questions, thanks :) --Ferien (talk | join TBA!) 13:01, 12 October 2025 (UTC)
- I do not think there is that much of a backlog of the interlanguage link stuff now. Most of that stuff is resolved now. we are definitely working on the harder side of it now. Focusing on nonexistent foreign language pages and pages that are more ones that should be created than syntax errors Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 21:02, 12 October 2025 (UTC)

Second opinion on Luis Suárez Miramontes?
[change source]For the past month, I've been working on trying to improve the article Luis Suárez Miramontes to get it to GA or even potentially VGA level. I'm still in the process of creating articles for it, but I was wondering if any of you guys could have a look at it, just to get a second opinion on if I can make it simpler in some places? ShadowBallX (talk) 01:56, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- You need to link or change complex words like considered, established, tournament and also link the word manager as it doesn't explain what the term means. Basically go through it again and any word not in the combined word list either link it to wikt or explain it in line. Other than that the sentences are not too long and the article flows well. There are also too many redlinks fr33kman 03:03, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestions. I already know about the redlink issue (as I mentioned, I'm still in the process of creating articles for it), but the rest of the advice is appreciated. ShadowBallX (talk) 03:45, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- And please use Wiktionary links as an absolute last choice, if at all. If an article is ever created for the term, we might want to find all uses of it and it's harder to find them if they're linked any way but local. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 00:38, 7 October 2025 (UTC)

Australia locations - AI concern
[change source]Over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed a large number of towns/locations in Australia (especially Western Australia) being made. I'm concerned that they may be AI-generated. Before I start tagging them as such, I'd like other opinions/eyes on it. Some examples include:
They seem to be almost AI summarized versions of the EN. articles. It's utilizing same source for population found from the En. articles, then has a lot of bullet point summaries of things.
Any suggestions on how to approach these? CountryANDWestern (talk) 11:57, 6 October 2025 (UTC)

any advice
[change source]ima new wiki editer and i've only been doing minor things like spell checks and adding links.
are there any articles that need major help? Xlowntheclown (talk) 16:35, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for asking. You can poke around in Category:Wikipedia cleanup categories and its subcategories and maybe find things where you think you can help. E.g. if you think it may be fun to research and find a source for a claim, you could look in Category:Clean-up categories from March 2014 and find articles that lack sources (some of these problems go back to 2007!!!) or if you know about scripting, you could try to debug Category:Pages with script errors. Spell checks and adding links is also super-valuable. Thanks for all you do. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 17:25, 6 October 2025 (UTC)

- QD templates can be removed if the issue is taken care of. In this case, I don't think it hurts to have a discussion since you said you aren't entirely sure it's a hoax.
- I see that the RfD has been removed more than once now. I reverted the most recent removal and warned the user. If they continue removing it, keep warning them until they reach a final warning, and after that we can block them. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:51, 7 October 2025 (UTC)

Removing untrue thing (falsehood)
[change source]There is an article, this one, where one (or more) users, insist on writing at least one untrue thing.--The user that created the article, seems to be young. Be that as it may, a tag is being removed (without that being a good edit).
1) Does anyone have authority to give me three reverts, from now (so that i again can try to fix the article, while 'totally steering clear' of the finer points of the '3 times revert rule')? (Note: that i have made previous edits to the article, is my claim.)
2) An alternative is that "i ask that the article should go to RFD, for having one untrue thing - and not about a small detail".--Note: I have already been on the article's talk page, re: some relevant stuff.
If the above is 'reasonably helpful', then fine.
If the above is not a simple request, then never mind.--Then i can have this article, as the first entry on a not-yet created "popcorn list". (As in, warning about a (smallish) train wreck, and no else else making any significant move to fix, and then i open a bag of popcorn, and looking at 'human nature, taking its course': a smallish train-wreck of an article, maintained-or-further evolving.) ~2025-28382-09 (talk) 13:59, 10 October 2025 (UTC) /~2025-28382-09 (talk) 14:25, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

I will be needing "3 reverts from now", to make significant fixes to the article.--I am fine with possibly doing some education, thru edit comments.--If you or some other user, is the first user to say, "Go ahead with (up to) 3 reverts from now, and make things good", and then we will quite possibly 'get somewhere'.--If you know of some other way to get the article fixed (that does not involve me), then feel free to pursue that avenue/venue.--Escalation? 'Clueless edits et cetera', are escalations one might say; Have the article fixed first, and then one can see if feathers should be 'un-ruffled', et cetera.--Have a nice day. ~2025-28382-09 (talk) 16:26, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
- Hello,
- As you probably know, anyone can send an article to RFD. The community will then discuss and when the time is up, an admin will take the decision on what to do. Note also, that at least in theory the article above looks like it might be notable. RFD is not for cleanup. As to different people editing an article, it is normal that some things get changed. When several editors edit at the same time, they should coordinate their efforts, if possible. Also, with very few exceptions anyone can edit any article. Eptalon (talk) 16:52, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
- When things get too messy, then "Nuke" is a solution that sometimes gets chosen.--Anyway, i am advising that someone (but not me) says, "Go ahead with (up to) 3 reverts from now, and make things good".--Re: co-ordinating efforts: one will likely have to do some extraordinary spoonfeeding,in regard to necessary edits.--If that seems simple enough, then fine. ~2025-28382-09 (talk) 17:44, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
- Dude, no one knows what you're talking about, and no one is going to take you up on your advise. If you want things done, go do them, but stop with this "someone else should..." If you want to try to help, go help. But stop telling others how things should run. CountryANDWestern (talk) 17:57, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

This page User:Cewbot/Interlanguage link templates need to fix is now abnormally large since the bot was briefly run on all interlanguagelinks. I have been manually going through it and fixing links and then removing them from the page.
I think I got all of the easiest ones. But if anyone wants to take a look at them, feel free.
After about a week this page wil become substantially smaller since User:Cewbot will fix all of the interlanguagelinks again and only check for errors on the pages in Category:Interlanguage link template existing link. So this is time sensitive. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 07:41, 11 October 2025 (UTC)

- Once the page refreshes, is there any way we could do something to clear the non-mainspace pages from Category:Interlanguage link template existing link because it really should just be article space pages Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 02:29, 12 October 2025 (UTC)

Questions
[change source]Hi,
Please, does a deletion vote without (or with very little) arguments have the same weight as a preservation vote with arguments ?
Does the vote of an administrator have more weight than the vote of a non-registered user ?
Also, what are the chances that I will get back the page I spent time creating ?
Thanks,--~2025-28471-43 (talk) 09:50, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- Rfd is not a vote, the closing admin will decide based on the discussion. Also editors who came here not to just vote but who have also done other things generally carry more weight. Note also that during the time it is bring discussed the article can be changed and improved. Eptalon (talk) 10:03, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks. Does that apply also to "Deletion review" ? Also, can the administrators still view an article that was deleted and its sources ?
- Thanks, ~2025-28471-43 (talk) 10:45, 11 October 2025 (UTC)

- Apologies for accidntally clicking a shortcut I will make the mesage here more clear Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 20:53, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- There is a very large amount of templates that are wanted on Special:WantedPAges and I would think they could be easily imported from enwiki. But some were deleted in the past, I believe likel because they were less used then Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 20:53, 11 October 2025 (UTC)

- Sorry about the mess as I accidentally pressed ctrl+enter since I was doing ctrl+v a lot
- These are all of the templates that have 100 or more links and are not present. I think almost all of them should be imported from enwiki unless something is otherwise keeping them from import Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 20:57, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- I've collapsed the top of this, I'm not sure we needed a full list from that special:page.
- A lot of the reason for not having these templates are because some of them are simply created from copying items from enwiki. Simply importing them doesn't help us where it isn't suitable or where it needs updating.
- If you had specific ones that needed importing, that we can do. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 21:01, 11 October 2025 (UTC)
- I am looking at this Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024/Template:1964 European Nations' Cup referees and would the best thing be just to edit Template:UEFA European Championship templates so that these do not appear like they are being used? Pages not in mainspace appearing in Category:Interlanguage link template existing link
[change source]I think that pages not in mainspace should not appear in Category:Interlanguage link template existing link because that is a specific tracking category for mainspace pages that User:Cewbot is gonna change or failed to change. Could we try to change Template:Interlanguage link to make it so that it does not add the category unless it is in ns:0? Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 02:30, 12 October 2025 (UTC)
- Oh it should appear on templates too, but I do not think anywhere else Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 02:32, 12 October 2025 (UTC)

- Basically this is not an error in the pages it is a proposal for editing the template so that these pages would not be in the category since they are not in the scope of the editing

Omitted Deaths
[change source]It seems like for all of the articles in Category:Lists of deaths in 2025 and Deaths in 2025, there is a considerable lower number of deaths listed in simple than in en, and it does not seem like there is any reason to this, since these articles are often actively updated. MrMeAndMrMeTalk 03:21, 12 October 2025 (UTC)
- The reason is that no one is taking the time to copy over all the deaths from English Wikipedia to here. In fact, most of the work is done by unregistered users. Is there some other answer you're looking for? canadachick (talk) 03:26, 12 October 2025 (UTC)
- I guess I would assume that, since this is pretty easily copyable, that the articles would be copied from one page to the other. MrMeAndMrMeTalk 03:35, 12 October 2025 (UTC)
Content translation tool seems to not work with wikidata properly anymore
[change source]I tried out the content translation tool on the article en:Hie Shrine and it has been giving this result

By contrast most of these links actually exist just fine here, and they are connected to wikidata. It also does not get templates.
The Hie Shrine (日枝神社, Hie Jinja) is a Shinto shrine in Nagatachō, Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. Its June 15 Sannō Matsuri is one of the three great Japanese festivals of Edo (the forerunner of Tokyo). Other names for the shrine include Hiyoshi Sannō-sha, Hiyoshi Sannō Daigongen-sha, Edo Sannō Daigongen, Kōjimachi Sannō, Sannō-sha, and Sannō-sama.
The main god of the shrine is Oyamakui no Kami.
History
The date of establishment of the Hie Shrine is uncertain. According to one theory, Ōta Dōkan established it in 1478. Another theory identifies the Hie with the Sannō Shrine mentioned in a 1362 record of the Kumano Nachi Taisha.
Tokugawa Ieyasu relocated it to the grounds of Edo Castle, and in 1604 his son Tokugawa Hidetada moved it out, so the people of Edo could worship there. The shaden was lost to the Great Fire of Meireki of 1657, and in 1659 Tokugawa Ietsuna rebuilt it at its present location. The shrine stands southwest of the castle, in the ura kimon direction according to onmyōdō.
So this is confusing. It likely indicates it is not properly fetching page and template names from the backend?
The behavior I expect is for it to give all the same text (no ai simplification or translation), but skip over articles that exist on enwiki and not simplewiki, and give piped links to the simplewiki pages if they differ, as well as giving all of the templates from enwiki, and doing the same for categories. But it appears it is only giving the raw text with all of the templates and links removed. It also does not apply categories. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 04:14, 12 October 2025 (UTC)

WMF board reform
[change source]This seems like the most appropriate place to post for this project (feel free to let me know if it isn't). Anyways, editors may be interested in the m:2025 WMF Board reform petition. Clovermoss (talk) 14:01, 12 October 2025 (UTC)
Images
[change source]People who know me from old will know that I've tried multiple times to get non-free images approved on simplewiki. This time I'm asking something slightly different. Previously Barras suggested that we approach the developers to make it possible so we could locally use images uploaded to enwiki here on simplewiki. This means we could use their images of logos, TV screen shots etc. without kneading to upload them here. This would allow us to avoid the problems and work load of processing non-free images ourselves. Any thoughts? fr33kman 23:33, 12 October 2025 (UTC)
